hda: how to implement component master_unbind?

Hi Takashi et al, I've been having multiple discussions with our i915 team w.r.t. audio driver behaviour when the aggregate component is unbound, triggered by i915 unbind. This came up again in the recent regression with devres allocations and I now dug into the topic again. In short, I'm puzzled how to really implement this. ALSA (or ASoC) don't really have support for individual components of a card disappearing in a hotplug fashion. At card level, we do have such support (USB, firewire and recent work for PCI hotplug). But not individual components of a card getting unplugged. After this, acomp ops are null are audio no longer has ability to talk to i915 driver (which makes sense given it's unbound). If audio was runtime suspended, this kind of works (but relies on some good luck). Upon HDA controller resume, we note acomp ops are NULL and HDMI/DP operations (like snd_hdac_display_power()) silently become no-ops. PCM streaming will go to /dev/null, but this is ok'ish since no monitor can be connected anyways. If audio was active, we start to get warnings or worse. Audio expects hw display codec to be powered and programmed, but suddenly it mey lose state. If the audio controller is actually part of the display hardware (e.g. discrete GPUs), then controller registers can stop functioning (they should be still available, but given the main diplay driver is unbound, odds of suprising behaviour are high). So this is less than ideal. I've been looking at options: 1) prevent/block the unbind if audio device is busy The component framework does not allow individual components to return -EBUSY, so there's no way to let others know that unbind is not possible now. This would force anyone testing DRM driver unbind to first unbind the audio driver and stop any active audio use-cases if needed. 2) unbind the ALSA card I've experimented doing a device_unregister() from the above callback, but this has not really worked (onion peeling exercise of new probelms). The code is shared by multiple controllers, so getting a handle to an snd_card object is not straighforward (drvdata is differnet for SOF and snd-hda-intel for instance). But with some new work, maybe we could call snd_card_disconnect() to detach the card and inform user-space. 3) continue as-is and try to fix bugs If audio is active, maybe we could force a acomp->put_power() to ensure a clean unregister of the display part. But this leaves a big chunk of issues especially with HDA controllers that require the display to be powered on, to function. .. Any ideas, and/or has there been prior work? It seems Takashi it's been mostly you who has been active working on the acomp integration recently. I also included Chris, Daniel and Jani who've had patches to hdac_component.c. Br, Kai

This is RFC patchset for Allwinner suniv F1C100s to support DMA and audio codec. Allwinner F1C100s has a audio codec that has necessary digital and analog parts. It has r-l headphone output and microphone, line, r-l FM inputs. ADC can capture any inputs and also output channels via mux. Any input channels or DAC samples can feed output channels. Add support for this audio codec. F1C100s utilizes DMA channels to send and receive ADC-DAC samples. So DMA support needed. Patch 1~5 adds support for DMA. Suniv F1C100s has very similar DMA to sun4i. But there is some dissimilarities also. Suniv features a DMA reset bit in clock control unit. It has smaller number of DMA channels. Several registers has different addresses. It's max burst size is 4 instead of 8. Also DMA endpoint numbers are different. Patch 6 adds DMA max burst option to sun4i-codec. On RK3399pro SoM (Radxa Rock Pi N10), for example, if we neglect to set this bit and proceed to enable hdmi_sound and i2s2 on the device tree there will be extreme clipping of sound output, to the point that music sounds like white noise. Problem could also manifest as just mild cracking depending of HDMI audio implementation of sink. Setting insert_pcuv bit (bit 2 of aud_conf2 Audio Sample register) fixes this. Two bitmasks in 'struct sdw_slave_prop' - 'source_ports' and 'sink_ports' - define which ports to program in sdw_program_slave_port_params(). The masks are used to get the appropriate data port properties ('struct sdw_get_slave_dpn_prop') from an array. Bitmasks can be non-continuous or can start from index different than 0, thus when looking for matching port property for given port, we must iterate over mask bits, not from 0 up to number of ports. This fixes allocation and programming slave ports, when a source or sink masks start from further index. These adds grace time for DPCM cleanup. I'm not sure when dpcm_xxx will be removed, and Codec check bypass will be error, but maybe v6.12 or v6.13 ? Please check each driver by that time. Previous patch-set try to check both CPU and Codec in DPCM, but we noticed that there are some special DAI which we can't handle today [2]. So I will escape it in this patch-set. [RFC PATCH 00/16] soundwire/ASoC: speed-up downloads with BTP/BRA protocol

This RFC patchset suggests a new API for ASoC codec drivers to use for firmware/table downloads. Problem statement: All existing transfers initiated by codec drivers rely on SoundWire read/write commands, which can only support ONE byte per frame. With the typical 48kHz frame rate, this means 384 kbits/s. In addition, the command/control is typically handled with a FIFO and interrupts which adds more software overhead. To give a practical reference, sending 32Kb takes 2.5s on Intel platforms, which means about 105kbit/s only. Additional non-audio activity is likely to adversely impact interrupt scheduling and further decrease the transfer speeds. New SDCA-based codecs have a need to download tables and DSP firmware which are typically between 20 and 256 Kb. The slow bus operation has a direct impact on boot/resume times, and clearly having to wait more than 300ms is a showstopper in terms of latency requirements and user-experience. Suggested solution: The MIPI specification and most of the new codecs support the Bulk Transfer Protocol (BTP) and specifically the Bulk Register Access (BRA) configuration. This mode reclaims the 'audio' data space of the SoundWire frame to send firmware/coefficients over the DataPort 0 (DP0). The API suggested is rather simple, with the following sequence expected: open(): reserve resources and prepare hardware send_async(): trigger DMAs and perform SoundWire bank switch wait(): wait for DMA completion and disable DMAs close(): release resources Benefits: Even after accounting for the protocol overhead, the data can be sent 8x or 16x faster on the link than with the regular commands. With the use of DMAs, the software overhead becomes limited to the initialization. Measured results show that transferring the same 32Kb takes about 100ms, a 25x improvement on the baseline write() commands with an actual bitrate of 2.6 Mbits/s. These results are a measure of bus/hardware performance mainly, and will typically not be too modified by the CPU activity and scheduling. The performance for reads is similar, with a 25x speedup measured. Limitations: Setting up the transfers over DP0 takes time, and the reliance on DMAs on the host side brings alignment restrictions. The BTP/BRA protocol is really only relevant for "large" transfers done during boot/resume *before* audio transfers take place. Mixing BTP/BRA and audio is a nightmare, this patchset suggests a mutual-exclusion between two usages. Scope: This patchset only exposes the API and a debugfs interface to initiate commands, validate results and measure performance. The actual use of the API is left as an exercise for codec driver developers. This patchset depends on a number of pre-requisite patches and will not build on top of any for-next branches. The main intent of this RFC is to gather comments on the usage, API, benefits and restrictions. The code and functionality was tested on an Intel LunarLake RVP platform connected to a Realtek RT711-SDCA device. [REGRESSION] ALSA: firewire-lib: heavy digital distortion with Fireface 800

Between the kernel releases 6.9.9 and 6.10.0, something changed that causes heavy digital distortion on playback from at least ALSA and PipeWire. The rhythm of the music is discernable in the output, so it isn't just random noise. It sounds a bit like bitcrushing, but not quite. The generated overtones appear to be dependet on the sample rate. I am sorry I can not be more specific, there are no kernel messages this time. As Mr. Sakamoto recently committed all these changes to firewire he might be able to identify the issue easily, which is why I'd like to ask him to look into it. The merge of imx-spdif driver into fsl-asoc-card brought new DT properties that can be used with the "fsl,imx-audio-spdif" compatible: * The "spdif-controller" property from imx-spdif is named "audio-cpu" in fsl-asoc-card. * fsl-asoc-card uses codecs explicitly declared in DT with "audio-codec". With an S/PDIF, codec drivers spdif_transmitter and spdif_receiver should be used. Driver imx-spdif used instead the dummy codec and a pair of boolean properties, "spdif-in" and "spdif-out". While backward compatibility is kept to support properties "spdif-controller", "spdif-in" and "spdif-out", using new properties has several benefits: * "audio-cpu" and "audio-codec" are more generic names reflecting that the fsl-asoc-card driver supports multiple hardware. They are properties already used by devices using the fsl-asoc-card driver. They are also similar to properties of simple-card: "cpu" and "codec". * "spdif-in" and "spdif-out" imply the use of the dummy codec in the driver. However, there are already two codec drivers for the S/PDIF, spdif_transmitter and spdif_receiver. It is better to declare S/PDIF Tx and Rx devices in a DT, and then reference them with "audio-codec" than using the dummy codec. For those reasons, this commit updates in-tree DTs to use the new properties: * Rename "spdif-controller" property to "audio-cpu". * Declare S/PDIF transmitter and/or receiver devices, and use them with the "audio-codec" property instead of "spdif-out" and/or "spdif-in". These modifications were tested only on an imx8mn-evk board. Note that out-of-tree and old DTs are still supported. Existing way of allocating soundwire master ports on Qualcommm platforms is dynamic, and in linear order starting from 1 to MAX_PORTS. This will work as long as soundwire device ports are 1:1 mapped linearly. However on most Qcom SoCs like SM8550, SM8650, x1e80100, these are NOT mapped in that order. The result of this is that only one speaker among the pair of speakers is always silent, With recent changes for WSA codec to support codec versions and along with these patches we are able to get all speakers working on these SoCs. This patch was used to add TAS2781 devices on SPI support in sound/pci/hda. And driver will also parser mono DSP firmware binary and RCA binary for itself. The code support Realtek as the primary codec. In patch version-10, add multi devices firmware binary support, to compatble with windows driver, they can share same firmware binary. [PATCH] ASoC: topology: Fix route memory corruption

It was reported that recent fix for memory corruption during topology load, causes corruption in other cases. Instead of being overeager with checking topology, assume that it is properly formatted and just duplicate strings.
