ASoC: SOF: Race condition in ipc.c

Folks, I have borrowed part of SOF architecture for my own DSP framework development as the memory on the DSP is extremely small and wouldn't be able to support SOF. Currently I am running into a race condition as below: CPU DSP PCM_TRIGGER_START sof_ipc_send_msg ----> <------Immediate ACK ipc3_wait_tx_done (wait_event_timeout) <------ POSITION update snd_pcm_period_elapsed As you can see TRIGGER_START didn't even finish and waiting for it to complete in ipc3_wait_tx_done function. However, before it could complete the position interrupt was issued which results in calling period_elapsed function. In order to fix this I assume below is called in SOF framework: schedule_work(&spcm->stream[substream->stream].period_elapsed_work); How is this design working? If the interrupt is coming too fast from the DSP than the associated function with this schedule_work will not get called as the scheduler will not get time to schedule the workqueue and elapsed function will not be called thereby not increasing the hw_ptr. How is the flow control for data transfer achieved? I am facing the above problem in my design. I am wondering if I can simply add one more IPC command(don't call wait_event_interruptible for this) after TRIGGER_START to start the streaming.This way schedule_work for updating period_elapsed function can be avoided and it can be called in an interrupt context. Even in the presence of problems (here: rn_acp_deinit() might fail), it's important to unregister all resources acquired during .probe() because even if .remove() returns an error code, the device is removed. As .remove() is only called after .probe() returned success, platdata must be valid, so the first check in .remove() can just be dropped. This is a preparation for making platform remove callbacks return void. From: Chen-Yu Tsai <wens(a)csie.org> Commit 44f362c2cc6d ("ASoC: rockchip: i2s: switch BCLK to GPIO") added pinctrl lookups, but did not skip the lookup if there was no pinctrl device tied to the I2S controller. As a result, the lookup was done on an invalid pointer in such cases, causing a kernel panic. Only do the subsequent pinctrl state lookups and switch if a pinctrl device was found. i2s_pinctrl_select_bclk_{on,off} already guard against missing pinctrl device or pinctrl state, so those two functions aren't touched. [PATCH v7 00/14] ALSA: hda: cirrus: Add initial DSP support and firmware loading

The CS35L41 Amplifier contains a DSP, capable of running firmware. The firmware can run algorithms such as Speaker Protection, to ensure that playback at high gains do not harm the speakers. Adding support for CS35L41 firmware into the CS35L41 HDA driver also allows us to support several extra features, such as hiberation and interrupts. The chain adds support in stages: - General fixes to improve generalization and code re-use inside the CS35L41 HDA driver. - Add support for interrupts into the driver, which is required for complete support of the firmware. - Refactor ASoC CS35L41 code which deals with firmware to allow for code re-use inside the CS35L41 HDA driver. - Add support for loading firmware and tuning files from file system, and creating alsa controls to control it. - Support firmware load paths for different hardware systems. - Support suspend/resume in the driver when using firmware. The firmware supports hibernation, which allows the CS35L41 to drop into a low power mode during suspend. - Support the ability to unload firmware, swap and reload the firmware. This is to allow different firmware to run during calibration. The intended use-case is to load the firmware once on boot, and the driver autmatically tries to load the firmware after it binds to the HDA driver.
