Instead it did make all play attempts (even non MMAP) to crash. (no crash details available since I desided to forget about it for now, working on unrelated issues for awhile) I did disable the MMAP so that player wont crash when requesting MMAP. System still dumps the bad pages at unload, play and capture seem to work OK, not tested extensively thou. -- Timo

Folk, I was advised to ask about the Tenx USB audio adapter here. lshal claims it is a standard HID device and a standard USB device. I wrote this on https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=489828 I've used the driver of kernel package. And Mr. Jaroslav Kysela replied me that I could try snapshot source. (Thx, Mr. Jaroslav Kysela. And on #alsa on Freenode, Thingol and gnubien advised me much. Thank you!) But I couldn't get sound back none of both: stable(alsa-driver-1.0.19) and snapshot (alsa-driver-1.0.19.34.g70f78.363.g0ec3b). My alsa info is on http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=af6a6e787d4bd5212bf766bf5d09fda1ab5e2300 I use desktop. Its mother board is GA-MA69H-S3H . The soundcard is onboard. [alsa-devel] How to tell user level hardware not support a certain format in a certain sample rate

Hi, runtime->hw.rates and runtime->hw.formats indicate the rate and formats hardware can support, so the user level plugins can auto-convert the audio data. But hardware may not support a certain combin of sample rate and format, and will cause hw_parm fail. In such case, plugin auto-convert will not work. How can I let userlevel know the failure conbin, so let auto-convert work? Thanks Richard

I can use aplay to play the recorded sound and it plays nicely. But right now, I'm working on a project that involves the usage of a small development board. Basically, this board does not have a sound card or an actual speaker. So I thought, I can use the dummy soundcard provided by the linux kernel by calling out modprobe snd-dummy. Right now, I'm still testing it in my PC so to simulate the board's environment. I have configured the .asoundrc file and create a new dummy pcm by putting the lines below onto my .asoundrc file. pcm.dummy{ type hw card Dummy } So, I change the above ecample code, so it listens to this new dummy pcm rather than the 'default'. Like this : rc = snd_pcm_open(&handle, "dummy", SND_PCM_STREAM_CAPTURE, 0); Supposedly, the above modification would allow me to record from this dummy pcm, no? I do this by playing a song, using aplay -f cd -D dummy song.wav and at the same time, execute the above example. As expected, no sound was coming out from my speaker. When the program finished recording for 5 seconds, I play back the result, but all i heard was just noise. Of curiousity, I try using file plugins. I modify my .asoundrc file like this: pcm.dummy{ type plug slave{ pcm file format S16_LE channels 2 rate 44100 } } pcm.file{ type file slave{ pcm d } file /home/mydir/out.raw } pcm.d{ type hw card Dummy } Then i called aplay -f cd -D dummy song.wav again, well.. still no sound coming out from the speaker, but it does output the raw audio file into my /home/mydir/out.raw file. I play the out.raw using aplay -f cd /home/mydir/out.raw it's flawless. But I can't use this for my implementation. What I need is actually a way to read raw audio data (or stream) from the dummy sound card, to a buffer inside my program. I need this because I'm going to stream the buffer to my server, so I can listen the sound from my server. I can't afford to use the file plugin approach, basically because later on, in my development board, i won't have that much space. So, the question is: capturing raw audio data from a dummy soundcard, is this possible? I'm pretty sure that if the file plugin works, means that the raw audio data is there. It's just that i'm probably doing a wrong approach to read it. Hence, needs explanation and help.. Please help me.. :( Thank you so much for reading my long request.

I can record from both internal mic and external mic (Quality is not so good, but is the same as in windows) Almost, is that to increase capture level, I have to set "one" channel of it. Eg: if I set 100% left and 100% right then capture level is very low. But when I set 100% left and 0% right or vice versa it works fine. Also noticed another bug: If I suspend/resume with compiz running, on resume I see wallpaper and mouse cursor, everything hangs for minute or two, and sometimes forever. 2.6.27 worked fine. Also hibernate doesn't work on my main notebook, but it is probably fixed, I update kernel to really latest -git and tell you. Big thanks for bugfixes, you saved me a lot of work and bisecting.
