Hello ALSA developers, I seem have noticed a problem with USB audio buffering. Prior to using *buntu, which uses ALSA 1.2.20 I had no problems with using my USB webcam for audio. When I switched to Debian, which uses ALSA 1.2.21a I noticed USB audio became choppy. The device in question is a QuickCam Pro 9000 webcam. I can confirm this to be the case since taking the 1.2.20 source and rebuilding it on Debian causes the audio choppiness problem to stop. Thanks, Shawn.

A safer method is introduced - but it changes the semantics quite a bit, as now all drivers calling snd_soc_update_bits() will need to make sure the codec mutex is taken. snd_soc_test_bits() - function does not need to take the io_mutex at all - all calls to it have the codec mutex already taken. Warning: Not even compile tested! Possible drawback: dapm_power_widgets() may hold the codec mutex for a few ms, which may be too long; meanwhile, calls to snd_soc_update_bits() are stalled. Of course we wish optimal performance and maybe the codec mutex should only be taken for such registers that contain both volume and dapm bits... Ideas, comments, all welcome.

Actually, there is a sequence of calls: snd_harmony_create, then snd_harmony_pcm_init, and then snd_harmony_mixer_init. snd_harmony_create initializes h, but may indeed leave it as NULL. There was no NULL test at the beginning of snd_harmony_pcm_init, so I have added one. The NULL test in snd_harmony_mixer_init is then not necessary, but in case the ordering of the calls changes, I have left it, and moved the dereference after it. I also put the firmware in the /lib/firmware directory. Now the MIDI seems to work on most files. There are a few that sound odd, but perhaps it's the midi map. I have no idea why the driver allowed the sscape_ctl program to load the firmware earlier, but it doesn't now. Was there an ALSA change between 2.6.28 and 2.6.28.10? Less happily, the sound seems now to have a very faint "zzzt" kind of "click" just before playing, which I think it didn't with 2.6.28. I'll verify that after I reboot into the old kernel." The variables are unsigned so the test `>= 0' is always true, the `< 0' test always fails. In these cases the other part of the test catches wrapped values. In dac_audio_write() there does not occur a test for wrapped values, but the test appears redundant. In dummy.c and ali5451.c, the context of the calls to snd_card_dummy_new_mixer and snd_ali_free_voice show that dummy and pvoice, respectively cannot be NULL.
