Can you try if applying the attached makes things work as you'd expect with
respect to the recording levels? Over here it seems to, although I get the
feeling we might as well rename the control "Distortion Levels" as keeping
it at 0 is the only sensible thing.
Even if this works, it's not a final fix, just to confirm. Given that you
posted to alsa-user... if you're not setup to apply this patch (to any semi
recent source) and recompile the driver I hope someone can help.
With respect to the duplex issue -- there seem to be no docs for 688 and
1688 which is a bit of a problem.

This update to the Kconfig files allows the ability to select/deselect
entire submenus, starting with the root "Sound device support" on the main
kernel configuration page. Inside sound support, ALSA/OSS can be easily
enabled/disabled. Inside ALSA, entire classes of devices can be easily
enabled/disabled at the ALSA menu (e.g. ISA, PCI, USB devices) without
having to manually disable individual cards within the submenus.
Modified menus: main, isa, pci, pcmcia, soc, spi, usb

I am very new to ALSA developing, some times I found my program get
a "snd_pcm_open with device 'default': Device or resource busy" error
if some other applications was using ALSA at the mean time (for
example virtualbox), but totem player can co-exist with the ALSA-using
application very well, what is the reason?
I tried play a wav file when there is another ALSA-using application
such as totem :
aplay -D default test.wav
everything went fine, but with "-D hw:0,0", "-D plughw:0,0", the
device will be busy, with "-D hw:0,1" or "-D plughw:0,1", the device
won't be busy but you can hear nothing, the documentation explains:
"The default device is equal to plug plugin with hw plugin as slave.",
so why "-D plughw:0,0" won't work? Thanks very much!

Adapt eeepc p710 mixer for virtual master control
Currently eeepc p710 mixer doesn't define any slave volume control. This
is incompatible with current virtual master control code, that will return
-ENOENT in this case.

I'll explain the issue a bit more: after commit 2134ea4f37d36addbe86d4901f6c67a22a5db006
"[ALSA] hda-codec - Add virtual master controls", alsamixer for example doesn't
work anymore on eeepc p710:
"alsamixer: function snd_mixer_load failed: No such file or directory"
I figured out that the problem was with the virtual master controls code and the
eeepc p710 mixer that doesn't have any slave volume control. Given eeepc
hardware and my understading in reality this virtual master doesn't seem much
useful (you have only one playback source - LineOut Playback), only for master
switch it is useful as you have Speaker and HeadPhone switches (Headphone is
name LineOut Playback Switch in this case) as slave switches. But as only
master switch doesn't seem good (it would be strange change vmaster
code to accept only a master switch) and I didn't want to refactor the eeepc
mixer, this patch seemed a good solution, please comment on it, what do you
think?
I also thought of making code to just disable vmaster for this model, I don't
know what could be the better solution.
Something should be done also for the other eeepc ep20 model mixer, it will not
suffer the same bug, but the way its mixer is currently seems to conflict with the
virtual master control idea (may be "MuteCtrl" would be obsoleted).

Hello,
I'm trying to add 24bit playback for E-mu cards into emu10k driver. These
cards use an FPGA, which is 32bit internally and it is feeded via 10k2 EMU32
BUSes. Unfortunatelly, the emu10k DMA cannot handle more than 16bit samples,
so kind of tricky stuff is needed. The already working 24bit multichannel
capture uses an DSP code, which splits an 32 bit sample into two halfs, sent
it over two DMA channels and then alsa lib (???) joins it back into S32_LE
sample.
I'm trying to use same technique in reverse way using a pair of A_FXBUSes for
one playback chanel, but I'm not able to set the DMA the way I need. Can
someone with emu10k knowledge help me?

My boss has started asking how long is it going to take to get our driver into
mainline. I.e. a list of things we need to do, that when all those items
have been dealt with, then the driver is accepted.
Is it possible to make such a list?

laissez-faire kind of person. We don’t want to accept bad things, but on the
other hand, hey, everything starts from less-than-perfect roots and it’s much
better to accept things that work but may not be perfect and then improve on
them when we can all improve on them and all the different vendors can fix
the small nagging issues they have instead of keeping them at arm’s length
until they’re perfect because maybe they’ll never be perfect without help.

first, the meta-help request:
Is there another place that I should be making this request? (lkml, kernel
newbies, linux driver project etc)?
Theres quite a bit written about barriers, but most seems to be assuming SMP
situation or memory mapped devices. Not much about devices doing DMA.
I.e I have read Documentation/memory-barriers.txt
Now the actual question:
Currently I have a driver that uses "volatile" - heres the relevant source.

The "volatile" is applied to structures that are either read or written by
device DMA. Certainly the driver in its current state doesn't work without
volatile qualifier. (BTW the device doesn't use host interrupts)
Structures ("interface") used for dma are allocated with dma_alloc_coherent()
In the following, am I using the barriers correctly?
1) Reading something updated by DMA
volatile struct bus_master_interface *interface;
while (interface->ack != OK) {
sleep(a while)
[ device changes interface->ack by dma ]
};

Here the volatile or rmb is needed or the loop gets optimised away.
2) Writing to memory, interrupt device

Is the wmb() a guarantee that the command will be in memory visible to the
device when the driver informs it of a new command?

One assumption I am making is that the compiler is not going to optimise
across functions
E.g. in the following scenario, is the compiler going to optimise the loop
away without a rmb()? If not, is this because of something inherent in the C
standard, or just because the optimiser isn't yet smart enough to see it?
I.e. it might work now, but when whole-file-optimisation is introduced, it
will fail?
