My OS is Fedora 11 x86_64. Previous snapshots didn't give me this problem, but I can't say which one broke the compilation, since I usually try updated snapshots only at kernel updates. I searched for this error and the only relevant report I could find is this one: http://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2009-April/016420.html a report from last April. This is RFC patchset for Allwinner suniv F1C100s to support DMA and audio codec. Allwinner F1C100s has a audio codec that has necessary digital and analog parts. It has r-l headphone output and microphone, line, r-l FM inputs. ADC can capture any inputs and also output channels via mux. Any input channels or DAC samples can feed output channels. Add support for this audio codec. F1C100s utilizes DMA channels to send and receive ADC-DAC samples. So DMA support needed. Patch 1~5 adds support for DMA. Suniv F1C100s has very similar DMA to sun4i. But there is some dissimilarities also. Suniv features a DMA reset bit in clock control unit. It has smaller number of DMA channels. Several registers has different addresses. It's max burst size is 4 instead of 8. Also DMA endpoint numbers are different. Patch 6 adds DMA max burst option to sun4i-codec. Hello, I have an Acer Aspire 4736G laptop. The soundcard that is shipped in this laptop is intel-hda based as shown (actually it's a realtek): cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDA Intel at 0x9b300000 irq 46 Basic sound output is correct but few feature are missing: - internal mic seems to be found but do not works. - sound output stop working when trying to send it using HDMI output - heads do not work when plugged neither when forcing pulseaudio to use it. I have an ubuntu 10.10 which is shipped with alsa 1.0.23. Under Windows 10 the dongle works without any special drivers from Yamaha, everything appears to be downloaded by Windows automatically, so I was hoping the device could be made to work under Linux relatively easily. [PATCH] ALSA: usb-audio: Always apply the hw constraints for implicit fb sync

Since the commit 5a6c3e11c9c9 ("ALSA: usb-audio: Add hw constraint for implicit fb sync"), we apply the hw constraints for the implicit feedback sync to make the secondary open aligned with the already opened stream setup. This change assumed that the secondary open is performed after the first stream has been already set up, and adds the hw constraints to sync with the first stream's parameters only when the EP setup for the first stream was confirmed at the open time. However, most of applications handling the full-duplex operations do open both playback and capture streams at first, then set up both streams. This results in skipping the additional hw constraints since the counter-part stream hasn't been set up yet at the open of the second stream, and it eventually leads to "incompatible EP" error in the end. This patch corrects the behavior by always applying the hw constraints for the implicit fb sync. The hw constraint rules are defined so that they check the sync EP dynamically at each invocation, instead. This covers the concurrent stream setups better and lets the hw refine calls resolving to the right configuration. Also this patch corrects a minor error that has existed in the debug print that isn't built as default. Hi PXA maintainers, I'm in the process of getting the old ARM platforms to all build in a single kernel. The largest part of that work is changing all the device drivers to no longer require mach/*.h header files. This series does it for arch/pxa/. As with the omap1 and s3c24xx series I sent before, I don't expect this all to be correct in the first version, though a lot of the patches are fairly simple and I did exhaustive compile-time testing on them. [PATCH] ALSA: pcm: comment about relation between msbits hw parameter and [S|U32] formats

Regarding to handling [U|S][32|24] PCM formats, many userspace application developers and driver developers have confusion, since they require them to understand justification or padding. It easily loses consistency and soundness to operate with many type of devices. In this commit, I attempt to solve the situation by adding comment about relation between [S|U]32 formats and 'msbits' hardware parameter. The formats are used for 'left-justified' sample format, and the available bit count in most significant bit is delivered to userspace in msbits hardware parameter (struct snd_pcm_hw_params.msbits), which is decided by msbits constraint added by pcm drivers (snd_pcm_hw_constraint_msbits()). In driver side, the msbits constraint includes two elements; the physical width of format and the available width of the format in most significant bit. The former is used to match SAMPLE_BITS of format. (For my convenience, I ignore wildcard in the usage of the constraint.) As a result of interaction between ALSA pcm core and ALSA pcm application, when the format in which SAMPLE_BITS equals to physical width of the msbits constaint, the msbits parameter is set by referring to the available width of the constraint. When the msbits parameter is not changed in the above process, ALSA pcm core set it alternatively with SAMPLE_BIT of chosen format. In userspace application side, the msbits is only available after calling ioctl(2) with SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_HW_PARAMS request. Even if the hardware parameter structure includes somewhat value of SAMPLE_BITS interval parameter as width of format, all of the width is not always available since msbits can be less than the width. I note that [S|U24] formats are used for 'right-justified' 24 bit sample formats within 32 bit frame. The first byte in most significant bit should be invalidated. Although the msbits exposed to userspace should be zero as invalid value, actually it is 32 from physical width of format. This is a series I worked on with Baolin in 2017 and 2018, but we never quite managed to finish up the last pieces. During the ALSA developer meetup at ELC-E 2018 in Edinburgh, a decision was made to go with this approach for keeping best compatibility with existing source code, and then I failed to follow up by resending the patches. Now I have patches for all remaining time_t uses in the kernel, so it's absolutely time to revisit them. I have done more review of the patches myself and found a couple of minor issues that I have fixed up, otherwise the series is still the same as before. Conceptually, the idea of these patches is: - 64-bit applications should see no changes at all, neither compile-time nor run-time. - 32-bit code compiled with a 64-bit time_t currently does not work with ALSA, and requires kernel changes and/or sound/asound.h changes - Most 32-bit code using these interfaces will work correctly on a modified kernel, with or without the uapi header changes. - 32-bit code using SNDRV_TIMER_IOCTL_TREAD requires the updated header file for 64-bit time_t support - 32-bit i386 user space with 64-bit time_t is broken for SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_STATUS, SNDRV_RAWMIDI_IOCTL_STATUS and SNDRV_PCM_IOCTL_SYNC_PTR because of i386 alignment. This is also addressed by the updated uapi header. - PCM mmap is currently supported on native x86 kernels (both 32-bit and 64-bit) but not for compat mode. This series breaks the 32-bit native mmap support for 32-bit time_t, but instead allows it for 64-bit time_t on both native and compat kernels. This seems to be the best trade-off, as mmap support is optional already, and most 32-bit code runs in compat mode anyway. - I've tried to avoid breaking compilation of 32-bit code as much as possible. Anything that does break however is likely code that is already broken on 64-bit time_t and needs source changes to fix them. [REGRESSION] "ALSA: HDA: Early Forbid of runtime PM" broke my laptop's internal audio

Hi, On my System76 Gazelle Pro (gazp9) laptop, internal audio broke after upgrading to kernel 5.10. The laptop's speakers produce no sound. Audio from headphones still works fine. A quick test is to visit GNOME System Settings -> Sound -> Output, select Test, click Front Left or Front Right and notice there is no sound. I tested a mainline kernel revision from yesterday (5.11-rc5+) and the regression is not yet fixed. [PATCH 1/2] ALSA: hda: Release controller display power during shutdown/reboot

Make sure the HDA driver's display power reference is released during shutdown/reboot. During the shutdown/reboot sequence the pci device core calls the pm_runtime_resume handler for all devices before calling the driver's shutdown callback and so the HDA driver's runtime resume callback will acquire a display power reference (on HSW/BDW). This triggers a power reference held WARN on HSW/BDW in the i915 driver's subsequent shutdown handler, which expects all display power references to be released by that time. Since the HDA controller is stopped in the shutdown handler in any case, let's follow here the same sequence as the one during runtime suspend. This will also reset the HDA link and drop the display power reference, getting rid of the above WARN. This patchset adds support to MBHC(Multi Button Headset Control) block found in Qualcomm WCD codecs. MBHC support headset type detection, both Mechanical and electrical insert/removal detection along with 8 buttons detection, Over current interrupts on HPHL/R, Impedance Measurements on HPHL/R. Eventhough MBHC block supports things like OverCurrent detection, Currently its reported as a kernel debug message. Should this be reported as an uevent to userspace? like the way USB reports? Any suggestions? First patch adds a common mbhc driver and the second one wcd934x specific driver changes along with sdm845 soundcard related changes. Common wcd-mbhc-v2 driver should be reusable across multiple codecs like WCD9335, WCD934x, WCD937x and WCD938x. Most of the work is derived from downstream Qualcomm kernels. In January, Intel kbuild bot and Arnd Bergmann reported multiple issues with randconfig. This patchset builds on Arnd's suggestions to a) expose ACPI and PCI devices in separate modules, while sof-acpi-dev and sof-pci-dev become helpers. This will result in minor changes required for developers/testers, i.e. modprobe snd-sof-pci will no longer result in a probe. The SOF CI was already updated to deal with this module dependency change and introduction of new modules. b) Fix SOF/SoundWire/DSP_config dependencies by moving the code required to detect SoundWire presence in ACPI tables to sound/hda. Integration note: This patchset touches directories maintained by Vinod, Takashi and Mark in separate trees, and will impact additional changes to use the auxiliary bus in drivers/soundwire/. [PATCH 0/8] ASoC: SOF: power optimizations for HDaudio platforms

This patchset provides two optimizations that result in significant power savings on Intel HDAudio platforms using SOF (Sound Open Firmware). a) We previously prevented the Intel DSP from enabling the DMI_L1 capability to work-around issues with pause on capture streams. It turns out that this also prevented the platform from entering high C states in full-duplex usages such as videoconferencing - a rather basic use case since the start of the pandemic. The support for pause_push/release was already a bit controversial for Intel platforms, in theory platforms should only enable PAUSE if they can resume on the same sample, which is not the case on any Intel platform. Since we didn't want to disable a capability that could impact existing users, the suggestion is to optionally disable pause_push/release at build time or via a kernel parameter, in which case DMI_L1 is enabled. In practice very few applications make use of pause_push/release so there should be a limited impact when disabling this ALSA capability. b) The use of the SPIB register also helps reduce power consumption, though to a smaller degree than DMI_L1. This hardware capability is however incompatible with userspace-initiated rewinds typically used by PulseAudio. In the past (2015..2017) Intel suggested an API extension to let applications disable rewinds. At the time the feedback was that such a capability was too Intel-specific and SPIB remained unused except for loading DSP code. We now see devices with smaller batteries being released, and it's time to revisit Linux support for SPIB to extend battery life. In this update the rewinds are disabled either at build-time or via a kernel parameter. As suggested by Takashi, a new SDNDRV_PCM_INFO flag is needed though to make sure the appl_ptr value is provided to the driver through the .ack callback. Distributions using PipeWire (Fedora34) and CRAS (ChromeOS/Chromium) can safely enable this option. Distributions using PulseAudio should probably avoid enabling it, although nothing is really fundamentally broken if they do. While in theory volume updates and mixing of notifications could be delayed, in practice distributions use small ring buffers that make such delays difficult to notice. Again both of these updates are opt-in to avoid any impact on existing solutions or users: someone updating their kernel source but using 'make olddefconfig' will see the same results. Distributions that care neither about pause_push/release or rewinds should enable both options, in case of issues users will still be able to override these build-time choices with a simple module parameter. When wm_coeff_tlv_get was updated it was accidentally switch to the _raw version of the helper causing it to ignore the current DSP state it should be checking. Switch the code back to the correct helper so that users can't read the controls when they arn't available. This two patches fixed the unbalanced PM disable depth. It could avoid pm_runtime implementation complains when removing and probing again the driver.
