[alsa-devel] [RFC] Remove Alchemy OSS drivers?

OSS has very little if any useful life in it left for MIPS, at least from my perspective. So I propose to remove the Au1550 driver - there is an ALSA replacement for it available. Anybody against it? Are there still any remaining features or platforms that are only supported by the OSS driver? The OSS code is so backwards that I'd like to retire the possible remaining MIPS users and then make OSS unavailable in Kconfig for MIPS. Ralf

As the "Wave", "Wave Surround" or "Front" Playback Volume must be changed to 70% (i.e. -12 dB) so that distortion won't occur when increase Bass and Treble from 50% to 100%, so the maximum gain in Bass and Treble are +12 dB

Hi folks, I'm digging into a custom, embedded ALSA driver for some hardware we are developing. The basic functionality (interfacing with an soc/wm8990 codec) is working fine. We have a new library that we are adding which interfaces with the system via OSS. In preparation, I built the vrec/vplay functions, which also use OSS, and they work fine with the OSS Emulation layer of ALSA. I have enabled verbose printk and debug messages, and am seeing the following entries in the log file. Since I did not have these enabled before I started integrating, I'm not sure if this is new, or if they have been there for a while. Are these a problem, or can I ignore these? I develop an embedded system on the Linux board with Freescale i.MX27 (ARM processor). � I succeed on sound, which is transferred using Synchronous Serial Interface (SSI). It,s fine and then I try to do test of inserting or pulling out a USB memory stick in the USB host connector while sounding. � I get the following error message from snd_pcm_lib_write1() of <linux src>/sound /core/pcm_lib.c after waiting for a while (about 10sec). � �� playback� write error (DMA or IRQ trouble?) � and then from snd_pcm_drain() of <linux src>/sound/core/pcm_native.c � �� playback drain error (DMA or IRQ trouble?) � (No sound during this period) and then it is sounding again. I want to prevent the sound from stopping even if something happens suddenly such as the USB memory stick is plugged in or out. I try to fix the above programs, but I don't succeed. davinci-i2s enables the use of ping-pong buffers by copying the sram sizes specified by platform data into the dma params used by davinci-pcm. This patch series first implements that same behaviour in davinic-mcasp and then specified sram sizes and eventq's for da850evm. To achieve the use of ping-pong buffers at runtime this patch depends also on the conversion of da850's SRAM allocator to the "Share RAM" region from the "ARM Local RAM" region -- originally proposed by Subhasish Ghosh[1] and recently reposted by myself [2]. This is because the "ARM Local RAM" region currently used by the da850 SRAM allocator is not addressable by the EDMA. The resulting behaviour, when ping-pong buffers are used by davinci-pcm, is that playback produces silence and capture acquires silence. However, there is no change in behaviour for da850evm build with the in-tree defconfig since suspend allocates SRAM which prevents a successful allocation of 8K by davinci-pcm and thus the behaviour falls back to the usual scheme. In the case of da850evm builds where CONFIG_SUSPEND is not set, playback will produce silence and capture will acquire silence until such time as the patches to change the da850 SRAM allocator to the "Shared RAM" region are merged.
