I had a look at the Spotify C API, and found that they were using the following code to output music from Spotify: snd_pcm_open(&h, dev, SND_PCM_STREAM_PLAYBACK, 0). I want use this function instead: int _snd_pcm_file_open(snd_pcm_t **pcmp, const char *name, snd_config_t *root, snd_config_t *conf, snd_pcm_stream_t stream, int mode) The function is found here: http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/alsa-lib/pcm__file_8c.html#94d0dc725e5… I'm not able to find anything in the documentation explaining what the two parameters snd_config_t *root and snd_config_t *conf is. What I'm trying to achieve is to write the stream to a file, and then read it from another application. But it would be even better if I could make the C application write to standard output. Can anybody help me with this? I'm not very experienced with either C programming or streaming, but I would really like to make this work.

This netbook has a only one jack output and an internal mic. By default, mic and jack sense aren't working. Using lenovo-101e parameters makes both work. This patch series updates asihpi driver from version 4.04 to 4.06 Major changes: - hpi6205 adapters no longer signal interrupts on message transfer, freeing the interrupt for use by streams. This requires matching DSP firmware. - rewrote alsa driver pcm stream timer function so it works better with small buffer sizes e.g. JACK. - update alsa control names to better conform to 'standard' style. Minor changes: add low level volume mute control, allow adapters with duplicate hardware index jumpers to be discovered, fix playback start for non-mmap adapters. Hello, I searched through the list archive and I can't find a way to list all PCM devices. aplay/arecord -L show only these that have hint show on. Is there such command that lists all PCMs? While on it, it is also hard to obtain a list of capabilities of a device. For example I don't see a way user can obtain the supported sample rates by a sound device. I have found a program (see it attached to http://www.spinics.net/linux/fedora/alsa-user/msg07230.html) that seems to work fine. Could that program or similar functionality be implemented in arecord/aplay so user can easily check device capabilities?
