I would like to provide some information that might help improve/augment ALSA for me and others using a creative external usb sound "card." I am running Fedora 11, command line (no windowing environment) and I have a Creative Xmod external USB sound card http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=209&subcategory=668&pr… This Creative device outputs sound OK through ALSA, but the Volume control/Mute knob DO NOT CHANGE the audio. Creative does not provide Linux drivers (the knob works to control volume and mute without installing any drivers on a MS Windows setup). In Fedora, turning the volume knob causes "escape characters" to be displayed on the command line. I have included a copy of an cropped lsusb -v log, below. [alsa-devel] Help with multichannel High Speed USB audio device

Dear list, I made an embedded device that has a CODEC with 6 inputs connected to an ARM9 micro-controller that has an integrated high-speed USB controller. Now, I need to write the USB code on that micro-controller so that i can capture those channels in real-time at 24bits / 48 KHz with low latency (ie. sub 10ms), on a computer. I only need my device to work with Linux, and if possible, I would like to avoid writing a device driver on the Linux-side. Is there already such a USB audio driver available that I could nearly use "as is" and to which i would conform ? Would you have some general guideline on how to write the high-speed USB device code ? Would you have any comment on the following : For simplicity, my device is going to be the "clock master" of the system since it is already has the exact clock that drives the CODEC. I will maintain a circular buffer of samples (well, frames of samples) coming from the CODEC. Each time a new frame arrives, i put the samples in the buffer and increase a counter so i know how many frames of samples I have in the buffer, ready to be sent. Each USB micro-frame (125ms/8000Hz), I send all the bytes corresponding to the frames that I have in the circular buffer. In average, 6*3*48000/8000 = 108, but I presume that could jitter slightly, which should not be a problem at all. Hallo, i found some time to investigate the issue with my "Hercules USB 5.1 Cannel Audio Adapter". The issue is pretty tricky and depend to host hardware, in my situation this is Intel DG45ID board. Symptoms are: if i use this sound adapter after some time i'll get: irq 16: nobody cared ... Disabling IRQ #16. After closer look i found, it depend on usb port. And if i use one "wrong" usb port on IRQ 18 it will broadcast interrupts to two IRQs 18 and 16, until IRQ 16 will die. The problem is... this happens only with this sound card. So this is not easy to locate bug. And it's working fine on Win Vista and on Mac OS on same hardware.. so it should be software issue. Mates, I can´t find the real meaning of this function. snd_pcm_hw_params_set_period_time_near At first I thought that it was used to set the time between 2 consecutive samples, but it is not. Does anyone could gimme some help with that? Tks

Hello, I've been working with Grant Likely exploring an existing issue with resetting the AC97 system on the pcm030 board. The easiest way to produce the problem is by power cycling the board and seeing if the AC97 and wm9712 codec show up in /sys/bus/ac97. I wanted to share with you folks to make sure there's not something else going on that I should be looking at, and if the results I'm seeing seem to make sense. A bit of background for those not familiar with this area of the code: When the board powers up, a reset() message is sent to the wm9712 codec driver which then calls the AC97 driver to perform a cold reset. The AC97 driver performs the cold reset by yanking the reset line on the AC97 link. The AC97 driver also calls warm_reset() after the cold reset is complete. Earlier the warm_reset() call was added in the AC97 cold_reset() routine to attempt to solve this bug, but it appears to not completely solve the issue. After the reset the wm9712 driver attempts to read a register. If the register value is verified the driver assumes the reset was a success, otherwise it flags an error. SDATAOUT or SYNC lines were non-zero during reset, putting the codec chip into a test mode. 2. Perhaps the cold_reset is not necessary and the warm_reset is all that is needed 3. The delay between the cold reset and the warm reset was not long enough. Possibility #1 I added some test code to force the pcm030 board to use gpio instead of the ac97 to perform the reset. This way the SDATAOUT and the SYNC signals can be forced to 0 while resetting. What I discovered is that this didn't seem to make a difference. I don't know if these signals might contain uninitialized values on power up. Should I still consider this as a potential problem, or is this pretty much a non-issue? Possibility #2 I tried taking out the cold reset code in the AC97 driver in hopes that perhaps the hardware would come up in a good state on its own. This didn't work at all. I put the cold reset code back in. Possibility #3 I stumbled upon this when I added a printk to make sure I correctly understood the flow of control. With the printk in place, the problem would go away. So instead I increased the length of time in the udelay() call right before the call to warm_reset(). I've empirically found that delaying 1ms (udelay(50) -> udelay(1000)) seems to avoid the problem. I'm not sure why this delay is necessary, or if it makes sense for the hardware to need this much time to come out of the cold reset. Thanks for your help. Cheers, - John

With Linux 2.6.31-rc3-git4 with included Alsa and Linux 2.6.31-rc4 with an Alsa 1.0.20+ snapshot from 13 July, sound on my NVidia CK804 (NForce 4 chipset) is not working). The patch adds a few small enhancements to the ASoC jack handling, as suggested by Mark in his comments to my Amstrad Delta driver, and a few fixes for related bugs found while learning Mark's code and testing results. Enhancements: 1. Update status of an ASoC jack while associating it with new gpios. 2. Really update DAPM pins while associating them with an ASoC jack. 3. Export ASoC jack gpios over gpiolib sysfs for diagnostic purposes. Fixes: 1. Apply mask on jack status report before using it, just for case. 2. While updating jack associated DAPM pins, use full resulting jack status, not the status report passed as an argument. Hi, Many ASoC codec drivers have an array to cache registers. The array is not used any longer after memcpy to codec->reg_cache. I think that memcpy is unnecessary, and it a waste of the memory. How about continue using the array instead of memcpy? read callback (of snd_soc_codec struct) is defined as a function that returns unsigned int: struct snd_soc_codec { ... unsigned int (*read)(struct snd_soc_codec *, unsigned int); int (*write)(struct snd_soc_codec *, unsigned int, unsigned int); ... } However, actual implementation of that callback in many CODEC drivers may return a negative error value (i.e. when a register is out of cache reg size). Should the callback definition be changed to return _int_ instead of _unsigned int_? Some drivers (like wm8900, wm9081) handle invalid registers with BUG_ON, in that case it's not necessary to return the negative error code. What should be the best way to handle this? The MAX9877 needs an address of start register when we write values to registers through i2c_master_send(), but the code for this was missed in max9877_write_regs(). If the value of control is 0 in the max9877_set_out_mode(), the value is not increased to 1, but actually the value to write to the register should be 1. And the register bits for out_mode and osc_mode should be cleared before writing. This patch adds machine support for Amstrad E3 (Delta) videophone to ASoC. Created and tested against linux-2.6.31-rc3. Applies and works with linux-omap-2.6 commit 7c5cb7862d32cb344be7831d466535d5255e35ac as well. Depends on patch 2 form this series: TTY: Add definition of a new line discipline required by Amstrad E3 (Delta) ASoC driver. Credits to Mark Underwood for his initial, omap-alsa based sound driver for this machine. Board specific audio function control (with related DAPM widgets) has been modeled after empirically discovered codec capabilities. Unlike other ASoC machine drivers, this one contains a line discipline. This is required for providig the codec driver with support for talking to the modem chip that can control the codec behavoiur. As the line discipline code contains board specific bits, I decided to make it a part of the ASoC machine driver, not the codec, and not a separate source file. Otherwise, some kind of a glue, like a bus over a tty, could help in linking the board specific part (bus device) to a more generic line discipline (bus adapter)[1]. In order to work at all, this driver requires a working McBSP1. On OMAP1510 based machines (not sure if other OMAP1 variants as well), where McBSP1 is a DSP public peripheral, that means the kernel must provide basic DSP support, ie. omap_dsp_init(), in order to power up the DSP. This used to be included in linux-omap-2.6 tree up to commit 2512fd29db4eb09e82d182596304c7aaf76d2c5c. Without that, the driver would not work, ie. not shift in/out any bits over the CPU DAI[2]. This limitation is not board, but CPU specific, and may apply to other code that makes use of McBSP1/McBSP3 on affected machines. I provide an extra patch [4/3] as a temporary solution. To work correctly in playback mode, this driver requires my prevoiusly submitted patch that corrects pcm pointer calculation for OMAP1510 based machines[3] (already included in linux-2.6.31-rc3). To support codec controls, this driver requires my previously submitted patch that adds support for modem found on Amstrad Delta[4].
