While probing, AC97 codec drivers and soc-core generically execute the following sequence: snd_soc_new_ac97_codec -> snd_soc_new_pcms -> reset ac-link/read AC97 ID to detect ->... -> set platform_data to ac97 by soc-core commit 474828a40f6ddab6e2a3475a19c5c84aa3ec7d60 adds platform_data to snd_ac97 instance. But ac97 platform data hasn't given to snd_ac97 before actual ac97 operations. Then while ac97_read access platform_data of snd_ac97 for detecting, NULL pointer oops will fire. That means old platform_data patch doesn't work in real-life cases. This patch moves the operation of setting ac97 platform_data earlier than ac97 reading/writing operations. Then it makes platform_data of AC97 become practically useful. Hi everyone, Jon, as we talked about earlier today, I've spent some time working on the MPC5200 AC97 driver to try and get rid of some of the nagging bugs. The two big changes that I ended up making were to remove the tracking of appl_ptr (and all the race conditions that went with it), and to fix the handling of AC97 slot enables/disables so that a stream can be stopped and started again without going through the hw_params() step. I know that you had the appl_ptr tracking in to try and solve the problem of audible noise at the end of playback. After discussing the data flow model on #alsa-soc this morning, I learned that the driver is really supposed to be free-running, and the ALSA layer is supposed to be able to keep up. It is also responsible to ensure that buffer is filled with silence at the end of playback to eliminate noise before the trigger can properly turn everything off. Only a couple of other drivers use appl_ptr, so I'm pretty sure this driver shouldn't be doing it either. Instead, from a recommendation this morning, I added a 'fudge' factor to the value reported by the .pointer() callback of 1/4 the period size. At first I thought this helped, but after more testing I find that the driver seems to work correctly with aplay both with and without the fudge factor applied. However, I was able to reproduce the noise problem when using aplay if I have DEBUG #defined at the top of the mpc5200_dma.c file with debug console logs being spit out the serial port. In that situation, the STOP trigger calls printk(), and a stale sample can be heard at the end of playback. However, I believe this is a bug with the serial console driver (in that it disables IRQs for a long time) causing unbounded latencies, so the trigger doesn't get processed fast enough. It doesn't help that aplay doesn't flush the buffers with silence before triggering STOP. Other programs (like gstreamer) do seem to flush out stale data before stopping the stream. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm making some bad assumptions here. So, please test. Let me know if these work or not. I've don't know if the last patch (Add fudge factor...) is needed or not. Due to some hardware dependence issues, some devices maybe require different suspend/resume execution order for CPU and Codec DAI to make sure the hardware can work normally after executing sleep and wakeup. In old ALSA driver, people include all suspend/resume operations of both CPU and Codec in same entries. Then they change order according to actual require. But in ASoC, we should give a chance to users to reorder CPU/Codec DAI suspend/resume instead of defining the fixed order if there are some strange hardware dependence problems. Most of the irq_req_t typedef'd struct can be re-worked quite easily: (1) IRQInfo2 was unused in any case, so drop it. (2) IRQInfo1 was used write-only, so drop it. (3) Instance (private data to be passed to the IRQ handler): Most PCMCIA drivers using pcmcia_request_irq() to actually register an IRQ handler set the "dev_id" to the same pointer as the "priv" pointer in struct pcmcia_device. Modify the two exceptions (ipwireless, ibmtr_cs) to also work this waym and set the IRQ handler's "dev_id" to p_dev->priv unconditionally. (4) Handler is to be of type irq_handler_t. (5) Handler != NULL already tells whether an IRQ handler is present. Therefore, we do not need the IRQ_HANDLER_PRESENT flag in irq_req_t.Attributes. Hi Takashi, I have run into the issue that OSS emulation layer provides less controls than the alsa mixer. One specific problem is the OSS Speaker control is not properly mapped on all drivers (among others the wss/cs4236 family) due to the fact that the speaker input/output is called "Mono" in this driver. I have found that there are at least three names are used by drivers: "PC Speaker" "Speaker" "Mono" for the same input/output pair (At least on the ISA cards there is only single purpose mono channel - to route the PC speaker). Which name should be used? I will convert all ISA drivers to the selected name (and fix the OSS mixer to map this name to the "Speaker" control). While probing, AC97 codec drivers generically execute the following sequence: snd_soc_new_ac97_codec -> snd_soc_new_pcms -> reset ac-link/read AC97 ID to detect ->... -> snd_soc_init_card commit 474828a40f6ddab6e2a3475a19c5c84aa3ec7d60 adds platform_data to snd_ac97 instance. But ac97 platform data hasn't given to snd_ac97 until snd_soc_init_card. Then while ac97_read access platform_data of snd_ac97 for detecting, NULL pointer oops will fire. That means old platform_data patch doesn't work in real-life cases. This patch moves the operation of setting ac97 platform_data earlier than ac97 reading/writing operations. Then it makes platform_data of AC97 become practically useful.
