Hi all,
I started to read about ASoC, but I didn't find much information apart from the kernel documentation files. Is there any other documents? Below are some questions mainly related to DAPM for codec driver.
How should the interconnections map be created?
What is the difference between using "SND_SOC_DAPM_PGA" and "SND_SOC_DAPM_MICBIAS" for an input? When to use each one?
Why in some codec drivers there is a distinction between left and right ADC/DACs when creating DAPM widgets and in others not?
How should be handled digital gains and mixing (after ADCs/before DACs)?
Regards,
Misael

Hi,
might be a dumb question for people knowing the externals of Alsa but
I'm not sure :-(
What is the best practice to control the volume of a Linux application?
I could control Alsa'x mixer for Master or PCM but that looks like a bad
thing to do since it changes the volume for every other app as well.
Is there another mixer I could use which is application specific?
Or do I need to implement an application internal filter to control the
volume by modifying the audio stream?
Thanks,
Wolfgang

My device has 220 registers, some of these are quite long (32 bytes)
and I have split them up into multiple 32b pseudo registers. That
results in about 300 registers for a TAS5504 and 450 for a TAS5508.
A large number of these registers are for BiQuads, DRC, loudness, etc.
They're not general purpose ALSA functions. What is an efficient way
to expose several hundred registers of this class? Making
snd_kcontrols for all of them seems pretty inefficient.
Is there some generic way to do register access from user space that I
haven't found yet? Or should I make two special snd_kcontrols, one for
read register and write register?

[alsa-devel] [PATCH] asoc: restrict sample rate and size in Freescale MPC8610 sound drivers
by Timur Tabi 29 Jul '08
by Timur Tabi 29 Jul '08
29 Jul '08
The Freescale MPC8610 SSI device has the option of using one clock for both
transmit and receive (synchronous mode), or independent clocks (asynchronous).
The SSI driver, however, programs the SSI into synchronous mode and then
tries to program the clock registers independently. The result is that the wrong
sample size is usually generated during recording.
This patch fixes the discrepancy by restricting the sample rate and sample size
of the playback and capture streams. The SSI driver remembers which stream
is opened first. When a second stream is opened, that stream is constrained
to the same sample rate and size as the first stream.
A future version of this driver will lift the sample size restriction.
Supporting independent sample rates is more difficult, because only certain
codecs provide dual independent clocks.
Signed-off-by: Timur Tabi <timur(a)freescale.com>
---
Please apply this patch for 2.6.26.1 and for 2.6.27-rc1. Without this patch,
recording on the MPC8610 is just plain broken, so it is a must-fix for 2.6.26.

Currently very few systems provide information about jack status to user
space, even though many have hardware facilities to do detection. Those
systems that do use an input device with the existing SW_HEADPHONE_INSERT
switch type to do so, often independently of ALSA.
This patch introduces a standard method for representing jacks to user
space into ALSA. It allows drivers to register jacks for a sound card with
the input subsystem, binding the input device to the card to help user
space associate the input devices with their sound cards. The created
input devices are named in the form "card longname jack" where jack is
provided by the driver when allocating a jack. By default the parent for
the input device is the sound card but this can be overridden by the
card driver.
The existing user space API with SW_HEADPHONE_INSERT is preserved.

I have a driver that supports simultaneous playback and capture, but only if the
same size and sample rate are the same.
I use these commands to play and capture audio:
aplay -D hw:0,0 -t raw -f S24_BE -r 48000 -c 2 test2.raw
arecord -D hw:0,0 -t raw -f S24_BE -r 48000 -c 2 test.raw
If I start capture first and playback second, then everything works. If I start
playback first and capture second, I get this:
underrun!!! (at least 1786051083.587 ms long)
underrun!!! (at least 1786051083.586 ms long)
underrun!!! (at least 1786051083.585 ms long)
underrun!!! (at least 1786051083.585 ms long)
...
This repeats indefinitely.
Can someone explain how this is even possible? 1786051083.585ms is longer than
20 days! How could ALSA be so wrong about the extend of the underrun?
