alsacontrol shows two 'Internal Mic' options and two 'Docking Mic' options, no 
External Mic option visible?

Now using: 2.6.39-0.rc3.git2.0.fc16.x86_64

While this laptop can use a docking port, I have none, although the BIOS does 
give an option to enable docking ports, I guess those don't do anything unless 
you actually dock the laptop?
