Sorry, I assumed (wrongly!) that when we have

		.silence = {},
	},

	},
	[SNDRV_PCM_FORMAT_GSM] = {

pointer "silence", and then "pat", must be NULL.

I'd better read again how fields of global struct variables are initialized 
:-(
