On Debian/Ubuntu, install a package called libasound2-dev
On SuSe, you can probably `zypper install -C 'pkgconfig(alsa)'` (I
think the -C is correct... for "capabilities")
On Fedora, it's `yum install 'pkgconfig(alsa)'`
