Please also see the patch below which implements some of the clocking
improvements I was mentioning previously.  This is completely untested
at the moment and I'd fully expect it to be buggy as-is but if you wish
to make changes to the clocking in the driver this is the sort of style
which should be used.

I'll try to test and merge this soon.
