Can anybody tell me if /proc/asound/card0/stream0 is not existing any longer and what has replaced it?

It's built only when kernel config CONFIG_SND_VERBOSE_PROCFS=y. In the case of alsa-driver tarball, this is enabled unless you add --disable-verbose-procfs configure option.
