[PATCH] ASoC: SOF: Intel: Fix NULL ptr dereference when ENOMEM
From: Ammar Faizi ammarfaizi2@gnuweeb.org
Do not call snd_dma_free_pages() when snd_dma_alloc_pages() returns -ENOMEM because it leads to a NULL pointer dereference bug.
The dmesg says:

Do not call snd_dma_free_pages() when snd_dma_alloc_pages() returns -ENOMEM because it leads to a NULL pointer dereference bug.

Wow, I wonder what is going on that allocation fails...
Can't really tell the reason behind the -ENOMEM.
It's hard to reproduce, randomly happens. I have hit this bug at least 4 times on my laptop with 16 GB of RAM. All happened randomly.
I tried to torture the memory with mmap() + mlock() + memset() + sleep(), then playing some audio while almost running out of memory, but still can't reproduce the same -ENOMEM.

Do not call snd_dma_free_pages() when snd_dma_alloc_pages() returns -ENOMEM because it leads to a NULL pointer dereference bug.

Please think hard before including complete backtraces in upstream reports, they are very large and contain almost no useful information relative to their size so often obscure the relevant content in your message. If part of the backtrace is usefully illustrative (it often is for search engines if nothing else) then it's usually better to pull out the relevant sections.

This is still an enormous and not super useful section of backtrace, at a glance the backtrace is longer than the rest of the commit :(

Do not call snd_dma_free_pages() when snd_dma_alloc_pages() returns -ENOMEM because it leads to a NULL pointer dereference bug.

This is still an enormous and not super useful section of backtrace, at a glance the backtrace is longer than the rest of the commit :(
Should be okay now...
"cl_stream_prepare()" and "RIP: 0010:dma_free_noncontiguous+0x37/0x80" should be the important parts to find this bug.

All being well this means that it will be integrated into the linux-next tree (usually sometime in the next 24 hours) and sent to Linus during the next merge window (or sooner if it is a bug fix), however if problems are discovered then the patch may be dropped or reverted.
You may get further e-mails resulting from automated or manual testing and review of the tree, please engage with people reporting problems and send followup patches addressing any issues that are reported if needed.
If any updates are required or you are submitting further changes they should be sent as incremental updates against current git, existing patches will not be replaced.
Please add any relevant lists and maintainers to the CCs when replying to this mail.

Do not call snd_dma_free_pages() when snd_dma_alloc_pages() returns -ENOMEM because it leads to a NULL pointer dereference bug.
The dmesg says:

[1/1] ASoC: SOF: Intel: Fix NULL ptr dereference when ENOMEM commit: b7fb0ae09009d076964afe4c1a2bde1ee2bd88a9
All being well this means that it will be integrated into the linux-next tree (usually sometime in the next 24 hours) and sent to Linus during the next merge window (or sooner if it is a bug fix), however if problems are discovered then the patch may be dropped or reverted.
Thanks, Mark
