[alsa-devel] [PATCH 0/1] ASoC: TWL4030: Analog bypass implementation - try2
Hello,
Second try for the analog bypass implementation.
Since the first try most of the things has been turned around - I tried to follow Mark's advice, I hope I managed well enough: [1] New power, codec state handling The codec will be powered at all time, except if the codec's bias level has been set to SND_SOC_BIAS_OFF via the twl4030_set_bias_level call.
[2] Keeping the power consumption on the lowest level When the codec is in SND_SOC_BIAS_ON state (playback/recording), there is nothing can be done, the amplifiers are powered, PLL is enabled. When the codec enters to SND_SOC_BIAS_STANDBY state, two thing can happen: - If none of the bypass switches are enabled, than the gain controls for the outputs are forced to power-down mode and the PLL is disabled - If one of the bypass switches are enabled, than the gain controls will be kept in their user configured state and the PLL stays enabled.
When the codec is in SND_SOC_BIAS_STANDBY (gains and PLL are disabled), change in the bypass config will trigger an event and if it is needed the gains and PLL will be enabled. Switching all bypass off will switch the gains and PLL off.
With the this implementation, there is no visible difference in power consumption compared to the previous, codec off way. So when the codec is in SND_SOC_BIAS_STANDBY mode and all of the bypasses are disabled, the additional power consumption is minimal, if any.

This patch adds the analog loopback/bypass support for twl4030 codec.
Details for the implementation: It seams that the analog loopback needs the DAC powered on on the channel, where the loopback is selected. The switch for the DACs has been moved from the DAPM_DAC to the "Analog XX Playback Mixer". In this way the DAC will be powered while the audio playback is used or/and the loopback is enabled for the channel.
The twl4030 codec powering has been reworked. Now the codec will be powered as long as it does not receives the SND_SOC_BIAS_OFF event. The exceptions are when the given change in the registers needs the codec power down/up cycle in order to take effect. Otherwise the codec is on.
When the codec enters to STANDBY state and none of the loopback paths are enabled, than the amplifiers, which are no in the DAPM path are forced to turn off and the PLL is disabled. When playback/capture starts the disabled gains are restored and the PLL is enabled.
When one of the loopback enabled in STANDBY mode, the disabled gains are restored and the PLL is enabled also.
In short: the codec always goes to the lowest power state based on the bias_level and the bypass_state.

It isn't ideal since what should happen is that the bias is kept on while any paths are active (not just digital ones) but it shouldn't cause any problems since all that should happen is that the checks for bypass paths being active will just always return false. I'll the patch - when the core becomes more capable the patch can always be revisited.

You mean, that if one of the bypass is active, and the core wants to set the codec to SND_SOC_BIAS_STANDBY, that the twl4030_set_bias_level should return with false?
Also, if the codec was in SND_SOC_BIAS_STANDBY and one of the bypass gots enabled, than it should set the codec bias_state to SND_SOC_BIAS_ON?
So the STANDBY state is really STANDBY?

No. The codec should always do exactly what it's told. The core shouldn't be bringing the codec down to STANDBY if there are any active paths.
