[alsa-devel] Can we remove un-used Sound driver ?
Hi SH ML, ALSA ML
We have below sound drivers in upstream kernel. But, these are not used from upstreamed board. And, these are for very old SoC. I guess Renesas doesn't/can't support these SoC/board anymore. Can we remove these sound drivers ? Because maintenance cost for these is not zero...

- ${LINUX}/sound/soc/sh/migor.c *2 - SH7722 - CONFIG_SND_SIU_MIGOR
*1 it is registered from ${LINUX}/arch/sh/kernel/cpu/sh4a/setup-sh7722.c but, no one enabled CONFIG_SND_SOC_SH4_SIU in defconfig
*2 it uses *1, but no one enabled CONFIG_SND_SIU_MIGOR

Hi Mark, SH ML
We have below sound drivers in upstream kernel. But, these are not used from upstreamed board. And, these are for very old SoC. I guess Renesas doesn't/can't support these SoC/board anymore. Can we remove these sound drivers ? Because maintenance cost for these is not zero...
These patches remove Renesas SuperH base un-used sound drivers. Maybe, these had been used from out-of-tree (?). But ... - these are for very old SoC / platform - these are not used/enabled from upstreamed platform - maintenance cost is not zero - we can't test/check these drivers since we don't have these board.
I'm very sad, but... Good bye migor Good bye sh7760 Good bye ssi Good bye siu Good bye hac

In upstream kernel, no one is using SND_SOC_SH4_SIU. (siu-pcm-audio is registered from arch/sh, but no one enables it on defconfig) This patch discontinues support of siu driver to reducing maintenance cost. This patch also removes siu-pcm-audio registration from arch/sh to avoid header issue. Thank you and good bye siu driver.

In upstream kernel, no one is using SND_SOC_PCM_SH7760 / sh7760-pcm-audio. This patch discontinue support of dma-sh7760 driver to reducing maintenance cost. Thank you and good bye dma-sh7760 driver.

Hrm. At least migor was active relatively recently, Guennadi was working on it in 2012 which isn't *that* long ago and there may well be systems still in the field. There's also still board code for migor in arch/sh so it's an upstream platform. Some of the others like SSI and HAC are definitely not showing any signs of anyone being interested though and I'd not be surprised if they'd been broken at some point.
Manuel, Guennadi - what do you think about this?

I'm very sad, but... Good bye sh7760 Good bye ssi Good bye hac
I still have working hardware for those 3 files, I just need to dust it off. But the last time I checked (~3 years ago) I had no issues with sound.
I still have the full board support code for the SH7760 hardware I originally wrote the above sound drivers for. If there's interest I can whip it in shape for submission.

I didn't know that there is user of these drivers... On which board ?

We need to keep existing driver if there is user...

It's a custom SH7760-based module system. Probably only 1000 or so exist :) I have no problem caring for these sound drivers outside the main kernel, I've been forward porting the kernel patch for this board system since 2005.
Delete them if you wish, there probably won't be any in-tree users for them ever.
Manuel
Hi Mark,
Thanks for asking.

Manuel, Guennadi - what do you think about this?
If Morimoto-san (i.e. Renesas) doesn't need that driver, I don't need it either :)
Thanks Guennadi
