just quit x and tried mb3, no sound. module snd-hda-intel did unload ok though (often the module is still showen as used when it's not)
i wrote a little bash script to try every model listed in the source code, and mb5 was the only one that workedish and i had lots of kernel mess along the way.

is this a new macbook, or an older macbook? (if this is a new macbook, I saw a patch for this,which might be in the latest kernel 2.6.33-rc3 from git);
