[PATCH 0/3] tlv320aic3xx4 updates
Hello,
While doing a kernel update on a sama5-based board I figured out the sound system was not working anymore, the debug session led me to the following commits. As I am not an audio expert at all, I am fully open to comments and suggestions.

As indicated in the datasheet, a 10ms delay must be observed after programming the divisors.
The lack of delay prevents the codec to work properly and the playback appears extremely slow and totally un-audible on a custom sama5 based board.

Current code expects a single channel to be always used. Fix this situation by forwarding the number of channels used. Then fix the derivation of the bdiv clock rate.

At power-up the analog circuits may take up to one full second before being charged with the default configuration. Using the analog blocks before they are ready generates a *very* crappy sound.
Enable the fast charge feature, which will require a bit more power than normal charge but will definitely speed up the starting operation by shrinking this delay to up to 40 ms.

Maybe the actual REFPOWERUP value could be exposed as a control so userspace has a way to set the policy?

Well, that was not my concern. I didn't realize Miquel actually used the Force power-up values and though the actual power up happened after configuring the clocks (as is the case for the dafule values). In this case, the delay is at the proper location.

With older VMID referenced devices like this one seems to be there's usually not really any good tradeoffs. You have to balance audible noise on the outputs when starting audio, idle power consumption and the time taken to get the device live either on starting a stream or boot. Generally for a given device there's a fairly clear optimum and trying to support multiple options makes things more complex and less robust.

All being well this means that it will be integrated into the linux-next tree (usually sometime in the next 24 hours) and sent to Linus during the next merge window (or sooner if it is a bug fix), however if problems are discovered then the patch may be dropped or reverted.
You may get further e-mails resulting from automated or manual testing and review of the tree, please engage with people reporting problems and send followup patches addressing any issues that are reported if needed.
If any updates are required or you are submitting further changes they should be sent as incremental updates against current git, existing patches will not be replaced.
Please add any relevant lists and maintainers to the CCs when replying to this mail.
