Nope, no luck recording anything. changing the input source doesn't seem to change anything at all. When I do "arecord..." using "stereo mix", I get a peak from the external mic-in, same goes for "mic" and "front mic". I also noticed, the external mic-in does not monitor, e.g. I can't directly hear the signal, although it should play, as "mic" and "front" are both turned on in the playback tab.
here's an alsa-info, taken during recording.
Thanks. Looks like the driver doesn't work well for selecting the capture source. Will check tomorrow.
(Meanwhile you can change the connection selection of the widget 0x17 via hda-verb to choose the capture source manually.)

It could be fixed before tomorrow. Now updated alsa-driver snapshot with the fix. Give it a try later. (It might take some time until the server is sync'ed. Check alsa-driver/HEAD and alsa-driver/alsa-kernel/HEAD files whether any relevant fix is contained.)
Let me know if it still doesn't work.
