[alsa-devel] no sound with hda-intel, conexant venice chip on hp 2836
hi,
i've just installed debian unstable on an hp 2386ea. This is the sound card it uses:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device 30b2
The driver is snd-hda-intel and everything loads fine. Alsamixer does the job equally well. However, no actual sound is produced. It uses the Conexant Venice (cx20549) codec. Nothing special in dmesg. I tried loading the kernel with noacpi, but no changes.
I attach alsa-info.txt.
Any clues ?
Thanks in advance,
pieter-augustijn

For some reason, your system is defaulting the output pin connections to the mixer as opposed to the pcm (Node 0x10 & 0x11 should connect to 0x19).
Are you dual booting to Windows? I've had issues getting this driver debugged, and this is usually one of the causes. I'll try to revisit it again soon.
In the mean time, try unloading the driver, then load it with "modprobe -i snd-hda-intel model=test" to correctly set the channels, then unload and reload the driver without parameters.

Hi,
It is indeed a windows problem. I'm dual booting with vista, and it seems only a cold linux boot will route the pins correctly. I've tried loading the test driver and then reloading without options, without any result. The codec file remains as is.
This is what the Codec file should look like:
Node 0x10 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40058d: Stereo Amp-Out Amp-Out caps: ofs=0x2b, nsteps=0x2b, stepsize=0x05, mute=1 Amp-Out vals: [0x26 0x26] Pincap 0x0810014: OUT EAPD Detect Pin Default 0x95170110: [Fixed] Speaker at Int Top Conn = Analog, Color = Unknown Pin-ctls: 0x40: OUT Power: 0x0 Connection: 2 0x19* 0x17 Node 0x11 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40058d: Stereo Amp-Out Amp-Out caps: ofs=0x2b, nsteps=0x2b, stepsize=0x05, mute=1 Amp-Out vals: [0x26 0x26] Pincap 0x08113c: IN OUT HP Detect Pin Default 0x0221401f: [Jack] HP Out at Ext Front Conn = 1/8, Color = Green Pin-ctls: 0xc0: OUT HP Power: 0x0 Connection: 2 0x19* 0x17 Node 0x12 [Pin Complex] wcaps 0x40058d: Stereo Amp-Out Amp-Out caps: ofs=0x2b, nsteps=0x2b, stepsize=0x05, mute=1 Amp-Out vals: [0xab 0xab] Pincap 0x08113c: IN OUT HP Detect Pin Default 0x62a1902e: [N/A] Mic at Sep Front Conn = 1/8, Color = Pink Pin-ctls: 0x20: IN Power: 0x0 Connection: 2 0x19* 0x17
The Amp-out values on 0x12 changed as well as the connection indications.
I'd be glad to help in any possible way with the debugging of this driver. Is the Conexant documentation publically available ?
Thanks,
Pieter-Augustijn

After years of research, scientists recently reported that there is, indeed, arroz in Spanish Harlem.

I have a very similar problem as Pieter-Augustijn, at least regarding the symptoms: Everything seems to be quite fine, I don't get any error messages and neither see weird things in dmesg. But using Linux my laptop has never produced any sound until now (trying different distributions). Neither after a cold start.
I'm using an Acer Aspire 5710Z and also I'm dual-booting with Windows XP. Since I couldn't find any clues about my problem yet I didn't know where to start tuning my settings (currently they're just still Ubuntu default).
I've attached the audio output of "lspci -vv" and the alsa-info.sh script.
Thanks, Sebastian

Unfortunately, your problem is completely different (even though the symptoms are the same). You have a Realtek ALC268 audio codec, and there is currently very limited support for it.
The good news is that I have a reference board and more detailed specs coming soon. I'll look into getting you a preliminary driver this weekend, and better support after that.

Is there any way to follow the development status of this codec? I'm still hoping to hear a sound of my speakers some day. :)
Sebastian
My alc268 board has been commandeered for another project, but I should be able to do more testing this week. Actually, Realtek posted several patches, and they are in the daily snapshot here: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/alsa/snapshot/driver/
Try it out and see if it works better. Your system isn't in the driver specifically, but load it with the option "model=acer" and see if it works.

Thanks, that already works so far, now I have sound just normally :) I couldn't get the microphone to work yet, but I'll try out more later.
