[alsa-devel] intel-hd on an intel G33 motherboard
Hi,
Maybe I'm missing something, but I've failed to get even the slightest noise out of the onboard sound card from a Intel G33 motherboard. I tried the alsa drivers from the alsa-driver-1.0.15 package as well as the the alsa drivers provided by kernel 2.6.23 (built as modules), to no avail.
The sound chip is identified as a Intel HDA / Realtek ALC888 on the Intel G33 ICH9 motherboard.
After reading some of the documentation from the ALSA site and googling through half the internet I haven't found out yet if this specific sound card is supported by ALSA and if some module options must be passed (such as options snd-intel-hda model=.....).
Could somebody be so kind as to point me into the right direction?
Thank you.
Best regards,
Patrick

Try "model=3stack-6ch". Also, if you look in the alsa-driver-1.0.15/alsa-kernel/Documentation/Alsa-Configuration.txt file, there are other models you can select for the alc883/888 codec.
Let me know if this works and I'll add your system to the driver.

Hi Tobin,
Thanks for you quick reply.
I tried both 3stack-6ch and 3stack-6ch-dig (the card has a spdif out). I found out that when putting on headphones on a separate headphone jack I get some sound with both settings. Hoever, the front out l/r, center/bass sourround back l/r and side sourround l/r port remain silent.
I set all channels to 80-100% in alsamixer.
A few more details from my setup: Shuttle XPC SG33G5M Intel G33 Express + ICH9DH
Interestingly, when I run alsamixer, it identifies the Chip as "Generic 1095 ID 1392", in other words in points to codec#1. I thought it should point to codec#0, e.g. RealTek ALC888
I have the strong impression that the channels are not truly set by alsamixer as they point to the wrong codec. I'm only a layman in ALSA, and I have no idea how to tell alsamixer to consider codec#0 instead codec#1.
Do you have any idea on how to crack this nut?
Below is the output of both codecs:

Ok, the second codec is the HDMI port. For some reason, it is getting assigned to be primary sound device. Try "alsamixer -D hw:1.0" to see if it can control the realtek device.
Oddly enough, I used to work at Intel as a contractor, developing audio drivers for their boards. They stopped supporting Linux when my contract ended.
I'll see what I can do over the next couple of weeks.

Try "model=3stack-6ch". Also, if you look in the alsa-driver-1.0.15/alsa-kernel/Documentation/Alsa-Configuration.txt file, there are other models you can select for the alc883/888 codec.
Let me know if this works and I'll add your system to the driver.

Hi,
Maybe I'm missing something, but I've failed to get even the slightest noise out of the onboard sound card from a Intel G33 motherboard.
Thank you.
Best regards,
Patrick

Oddly enough, I used to work at Intel as a contractor, developing audio drivers for their boards. They stopped supporting Linux when my contract ended.
Just curious - is there really anything Intel could do at this point to improve the snd-hda-intel situation? My impression is that their decision to architect the thing such that every vendor can wire things up their own way (or "add value" in marketing speak) is the root of the support nightmare that these devices are.
It seems that the only way to improve things would be to either get every single PC vendor to help, or make the pin configs settable from userspace and develop a tool to translate from the vendor provided Windows .inf files.
Do I grok the situation correctly?

Close. Actually, the snd-hda-intel protocol is something that Intel & Microsoft cobbled together. Ideally, there would be a general purpose driver for the audio bus, and a user space application that would configure it. Takashi, myself, and a couple of other developers are exploring this method currently, but with the major influx of new systems, it's been hard to keep up and develop a new api. We hope to get into a beta for 2.6.26 kernel release. Keep watching the email threads.

Aha! I *knew* that some party hostile to Linux must have had a hand in it. ;-)

Thank you for taking interest in my problem.
I tried alsamixer -D hw:1.0 and similar combinations, but the card doesn't speak to me:
#alsamixer -D hw:1.0 alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for hw:1.0: No such device
It is a pity that Intel hasn't made the choice of a unvarying unified APIs. Unhappy collaborations such as those between Microsoft and Intel usually bring trouble and pain to developers.
It's quite infuriating to only get sound out the card via headphones which means that the card is working to a certain degree. It looks like it's taunting me ;-)

Hi Tobin,
Thanks for you quick reply.
Thank you.

Patrick

Try "model=3stack-6ch". Also, if you look in the alsa-driver-1.0.15/alsa-kernel/Documentation/Alsa-Configuration.txt file, there are other models you can select for the alc883/888 codec.
Let me know if this works and I'll add your system to the driver.

Hi,
Maybe I'm missing something, but I've failed to get even the slightest noise out of the onboard sound card from a Intel G33 motherboard.
Thank you.

Patrick

Hi,
I googled some document about the G33 motherboard and the "Shuttle XPC SG33G5M".
The G33 have 3 jacks on the back panel, while the "XPC SG33G5M" have 5 jacks on the back panel.
Does it mean that the XPC extend the jacks?
Hi,
I tried with the corrected syntax (alsamixer -D hw:1,0), to no avail. I get the following:
# alsamixer -D hw:1,0 ALSA lib conf.c:3840:(parse_args) Unknown parameter 1 ALSA lib conf.c:3966:(snd_config_expand) Parse arguments error: No such file or directory ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL hw:1,0
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for hw:1,0: No such file or directory
I'm not sure I understand your question about extending the jacks. The SG33G5M has indeed 5 jacks on the back:
1 front out l/r 1 center/bass 1 sourround back l/r 1 side sourround 1 line in
+ an spdif out
All the jacks are directly soldered on the motherboard. The XPC motherboard is promoted as 7.1 capable.
The motherboard also exists in a SG33G5M "Deluxe" version with a supplementary spdif in + bluetooth + ...

The model=3stack-dig or 3stack-6ch-dig won't be okay for the SG33G5M, because it's 5 jacks + spdif.
There should be a model "5stack-dig" for your motherboard. but the 888 driver doesn't provide a 5stack-dig model now.

Sorry, your motherboard just use G33 chipset, it's not DG33BU desktop board manufactured by intel. I mixed them up.

Ok, need to step back in the thread a bit. Now that we've established that this is not an Intel manufactured motherboard (not that they make their own anymore), I need more detailed information on what the OS see's. Please run http://bulletproof.servebeer.com/alsa/scripts/alsa-info.sh and post the link that it generates. This will give me a detailed snapshot of your hardware that I can use for debugging.
I will begin working on this as soon as I get this info. I hope to get you enabled this weekend if possible, this year at the latest. :)
Thanks,
Tobin

Hi Tobin,
Thanks for you quick reply.
Thank you.

Patrick

Try "model=3stack-6ch". Also, if you look in the alsa-driver-1.0.15/alsa-kernel/Documentation/Alsa-Configuration.txt file, there are other models you can select for the alc883/888 codec.
Let me know if this works and I'll add your system to the driver.

Hi,
Maybe I'm missing something, but I've failed to get even the slightest noise out of the onboard sound card from a Intel G33 motherboard.
Thank you.
Best regards,
Patrick

Hi,
Here's the pastebin information http://pastebin.ca/834640
That was using 3stack-6ch-dig
For experimentation's sake:
If I use 6stack-dig I get the following http://pastebin.ca/834644 If I use 6stack-hp I get the following http://pastebin.ca/834646
Thanks for helping me out. It would be nice if it worked :-)

Hi,
Maybe I'm missing something, but I've failed to get even the slightest noise out of the onboard sound card from a Intel G33 motherboard.
Thank you.

Patrick

Hi,
Here's the pastebin information http://pastebin.ca/834640
That was using 3stack-6ch-dig
The 3stack-6ch-dig won't work because it use 0x18 and 0x1a as the effective pins, which is different from your pins layout.
For experimentation's sake:
If I use 6stack-dig I get the following http://pastebin.ca/834644 If I use 6stack-hp I get the following http://pastebin.ca/834646
Did you do any testing with those two configures? After analyzing your information, I guess that you can get voice from the output jacks with those configurations.
Thanks for helping me out. It would be nice if it worked :-)

Ok, need to step back in the thread a bit. Now that we've
established
that this is not an Intel manufactured motherboard (not that they

I will begin working on this as soon as I get this info. I hope to

Hi Tobin,
Thanks for you quick reply.
I tried both 3stack-6ch and 3stack-6ch-dig (the card has a spdif
out).
Interestingly, when I run alsamixer, it identifies the Chip as
"Generic 1095 ID 1392", in other words in points to codec#1. I thought it should point to codec#0, e.g. RealTek ALC888
I have the strong impression that the channels are not truly set by
alsamixer as they point to the wrong codec. I'm only a layman in ALSA, and I have no idea how to tell alsamixer to consider codec#0 instead codec#1.
Do you have any idea on how to crack this nut?
Below is the output of both codecs:
Thank you.

Patrick

Try "model=3stack-6ch". Also, if you look in the
alsa-driver-1.0.15/alsa-kernel/Documentation/Alsa-Configuration.txt
file, there are other models you can select for the alc883/888
codec.
Let me know if this works and I'll add your system to the driver.

Hi,
Maybe I'm missing something, but I've failed to get even the
slightest
noise out of the onboard sound card from a Intel G33 motherboard.
I
tried the alsa drivers from the alsa-driver-1.0.15 package as
well as
the the alsa drivers provided by kernel 2.6.23 (built as
modules), to
no avail.
The sound chip is identified as a Intel HDA / Realtek ALC888 on
the Intel G33 ICH9 motherboard.
After reading some of the documentation from the ALSA site and
googling through half the internet I haven't found out yet if this specific sound card is supported by ALSA and if some module options must be passed (such as options snd-intel-hda model=.....).
Could somebody be so kind as to point me into the right
direction?
Thank you.

Hi,
6stack-dig, 6stack-hp: I tested all channels, and indeed I get sound but only from the headphone jack on the front. All other channels remain silent (front, center,rear,...)

Hi,
Here's the pastebin information http://pastebin.ca/834640

I tried both 3stack-6ch and 3stack-6ch-dig (the card has a spdif
out).

Hi,
Maybe I'm missing something, but I've failed to get even the

noise out of the onboard sound card from a Intel G33 motherboard.
I
tried the alsa drivers from the alsa-driver-1.0.15 package as
well as
the the alsa drivers provided by kernel 2.6.23 (built as
modules), to
Could somebody be so kind as to point me into the right
direction?
Thank you.

Hi,

Hi,
It's a little weird that the sound only come from headphone. Seems that the 0x1b is the hp pin and 0x14 is the Front line out pin. Both of them are connected to 0x0c widget. If there is sound on hp, there should be sound on Front line out.
May you rebuild the alsa-driver with debug option to get some info? ./configure --with-debug=detect; make;make install;
After reload the driver, please show the result of "amixer contents", "cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#0" and "dmesg".
Thanks!

Hi,
Here's the pastebin information http://pastebin.ca/834640

Hi Tobin,
Thanks for you quick reply.
I tried both 3stack-6ch and 3stack-6ch-dig (the card has a spdif
out).

The sound chip is identified as a Intel HDA / Realtek ALC888 on the Intel G33 ICH9 motherboard.
I'm using a Dell Inspiron 530 with a G33 chipset, and I can confirm that the sound output isn't quite good. The Inspiron possibly needs a specific quirk to get the 5.1 output right, and even in 2ch mode the pin assignment is strange.
Hi,
What do you mean by "isn't quite good"? I only get sound via the headphone jacks, all other jacks are silent. I'm asking because maybe DELL did something right and you are slightly more lucky than me? I have a SG33G5M Shuttle XPC barebone, and maybe something was soldiered differently.

The sound quality seems poor compared to other systems using the same speaker set (it seems that I only have a headphone output available and I'm using it as line out). I'll make some tests this weekend to correctly route the outputs in the Inspiron and compare it to the XPC codec data you posted.
