it seems to truely be a BIOS issue, as I don't see a difference in lspci -vvxxx between our systems:

ALSA, instead of seeing ALC660, on my box sees ALC660-VD, with very little in the way of devices (only front output) - which does not work either :(
Stumped on where to go from here...
