Since I upgraded my bios (in which the changelog mentioned nothing about sound changes, damn MSI), my onboard audio no longer work. I get the following in dmesg:
hda-intel: Error creating card! HDA Intel: probe of 0000:00:14.2 failed with error -12
-12 is -ENOMEM so I'm guessing some BIOS table is involved and tricks the driver into allocating too much memory.
Try to turn on CONFIG_SND_DEBUG=y. If you still don't get any relevant error messages, it's really an error from kmalloc().
Usually, it's a conflict of sound slots to be assigned, etc.
