It shouldn't. The polling mode doesn't give any behavioral change, and the CPU usage can't be that high.

Another thing to try is to replace the whole HD-audio stack with the last working one (was it 2.6.32?), and check whether it works with 2.6.32 core.
Could you give more details on how to do this? Does it consist in taking the sound/ directory of 2.6.32 and copying it over 2.6.33-rc1 ? Or less files?
I'd try first only sound/pci/hda/* files.
