Total of 6 fixes and 3 cleanups - cleanups are last. All of the fixes address problems that present themselves in situation when user engages in codec driver reload. Second condition to reproduce is two-step initialization of HDAudio codec - this is the case only for ASoC HDAudio bus driver as snd_hda_intel calls only compound function snd_hda_codec_new(). Once these conditions are met, several reload/unload scenarios end with null-ptr-deref and page faults. Goal of the series is to allow codec/bus driver reloading without any errors. Regression playing 24bit/96kHz audio on USB audio interface between 5.10.94 and 5.15.21

Hi, I have a program that configures a Behringer UMC404HD 192k USB audio interface for playback as follows (pseudocode): snd_pcm_hw_params_set_channels(pcm, hwp, 2); snd_pcm_hw_params_set_format(pcm, hwp, SND_PCM_FORMAT_S24_3LE); snd_pcm_hw_params_set_access(pcm, hwp, SND_PCM_ACCESS_MMAP_INTERLEAVED); snd_pcm_hw_params_set_rate(pcm, hwp, val=96000, dir=0); snd_pcm_hw_params_set_period_size_near(pcm, hwp, val=513, dir=0); // If I confirm at this point with snd_pcm_hw_params_get_period_size, // I get back 513. snd_pcm_hw_params_set_buffer_size_near(pcm, hwp, val=2052); snd_pcm_hw_params(pcm, hwp); // If I confirm with snd_pcm_hw_params_get_buffer_size, // I get back 2052. On Linux 5.10.94 (specifically Arch Linux ARM package linux-rpi-5.10.94-1), this succeeds, and I can play back audio just fine. On 5.15.21 (specifically linux-rpi-5.15.21-3), all the calls succeed apart from the last one, which returns EINVAL. (My actual program is written in Rust and uses a Rust wrapper library for libasound, https://docs.rs/alsa/0.6.0/alsa/, but the calls should be the ones listed.) I confirmed with snd_pcm_hw_params_test_format that the S24_3LE format is supported. On both kernels it is successful. I confirmed with snd_pcm_hw_params_test_rate that 96 kHz is supported. On both kernels it is successful. There are differences though. When I query these: snd_pcm_hw_params_get_period_size_min snd_pcm_hw_params_get_period_size_max snd_pcm_hw_params_get_buffer_size_min snd_pcm_hw_params_get_buffer_size_max Then on 5.10.94 (the good version), I get: period size min/max: 12/32768, buffer size min/max: 24/65536 But on 5.15.21 (the bad version), I get: period size min/max: 13/71332, buffer size min/max: 26/142663 Also, after I set the period size to 513, if I then query the buffer size min/max, on 5.10.94 I get: buffer size min/max: 1026/65536 But on 5.15.21 I get: buffer size min/max: 1027/142663 In lsmod, snd_usb_audio shows up, and from lsusb -v, the UMC404HD appears to be a standard USB audio interface. The lsusb output is identical on both kernels. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help further diagnose the issue, or if I should report this elsewhere. I am testing many headsets on Android platform with different kernel versions. On kernel-5.10, calling sequence for playback is 1. snd_usb_hw_params -> set highest sampling rate, no SAMPLING_FREQ_CONTROL USB request sent in this stage 2. snd_pcm_release 3. snd_usb_hw_params -> set proper sampling rate, still no SAMPLING_FREQ_CONTROL USB request 4. snd_usb_pcm_parepare -> in configure_endpoint SAMPLING_FREQ_CONTROL USB request was sent on USB bus With the same calling sequence, a slightly behavior change on kernel- 5.15 is 1. snd_usb_hw_params -> set highest sampling rate, SAMPLING_FREQ_CONTROL USB request was sent on USB bus 2. snd_pcm_release 3. snd_usb_hw_params -> set proper sampling rate, SAMPLING_FREQ_CONTROL USB request was sent too (because configure_endpoint was moved to snd_usb_hw_params function) 4. snd_usb_pcm_parepare -> no SAMPLING_FREQ_CONTROL USB request because of USB EP flag check I checked all USB packets and confirmed audio data output was correct. But there may be missing sound problem for the first sound with many headsets (for example Samsung headset). I found this issue is related to two-times sampling rate set request. (I tried to forcibly skip first USB request, everything became okay.) So do you guys know why configure_endpoint was moved to snd_usb_hw_params? Or could you provide patch for this problem? [PATCH v4 00/11] ASoC: cleanups and improvements for jz4740-i2s

This series is a preparatory cleanup of the jz4740-i2s driver before adding support for a new SoC. The two improvements are lifting unnecessary restrictions on sample rates and formats -- the existing ones appear to be derived from the limitations of the JZ4740's internal codec and don't reflect the actual capabilities of the I2S controller. I'm unable to test the series on any JZ47xx SoCs, but I have tested on an X1000 (which is the SoC I'll be adding in a followup series). [PATCH v6 0/4] Let userspace know when snd-hda-intel needs i915

Currently, kernel/module annotates module dependencies when request_symbol is used, but it doesn't cover more complex inter-driver dependencies that are subsystem and/or driver-specific. That's because module_try_get() and symbol_get() doesn't try to setup the module owner. In the case of hdmi sound, depending on the CPU/GPU, sometimes the snd_hda_driver can talk directly with the hardware, but sometimes, it uses the i915 driver. When the snd_hda_driver uses i915, it should first be unbind/rmmod, as otherwise trying to unbind/rmmod the i915 driver cause driver issues, as as reported by CI tools with different GPU models: https://intel-gfx-ci.01.org/tree/drm-tip/IGT_6415/fi-tgl-1115g4/igt@core_ho… https://intel-gfx-ci.01.org/tree/drm-tip/CI_DRM_11495/bat-adlm-1/igt@i915_m… In the past, just a few CPUs were doing such bindings, but this issue now applies to all "modern" Intel CPUs that have onboard graphics, as well as to the newer discrete GPUs. With the discrete GPU case, the HDA controller is physically separate and requires i915 to power on the hardware for all hardware access. In this case, the issue is hit basicly 100% of the time. With on-board graphics, i915 driver is needed only when the display codec is accessed. If i915 is unbind during runtime suspend, while snd-hda-intel is still bound, nothing bad happens, but unbinding i915 on other situations may also cause issues. So, add support at kernel/modules to properly set the holders when try_module_get() and symbol_get() are used. This allow allow audio drivers to properly annotate when a dependency on a DRM driver dependencies exists, and add a call to such new function at the snd-hda driver when it successfully binds into the DRM driver. With that, userspace tools can now check and properly remove the audio driver before trying to remove or unbind the GPU driver. It should be noticed that this series conveys the hidden module dependencies. Other changes are needed in order to allow removing or unbinding the i915 driver while keeping the snd-hda-intel driver loaded/bound. With that regards, there are some discussions on how to improve this at alsa-devel a while back: https://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2021-September/190099… So, future improvements on both in i915 and the audio drivers could be made. E.g. with discrete GPUs, it's the only codec of the card, so it seems feasible to detach the ALSA card if i915 is bound (using infra made for VGA switcheroo), but, until these improvements are done and land in upstream, audio drivers needs to be unbound if i915 driver goes unbind. Yet, even if such fixes got merged, this series is still needed, as it makes such dependencies more explicit and easier to debug.
