Lock-free dmix considered harmful

I'm in the process of adding monitoring support to dmix (i.e. the ability for applications to capture the sound being played back through the speakers) - expect patches for this soon. However while reading the dmix source code I came across something weird. Dmix uses a lock-free mixing implementation based on (architecture-dependent) atomic operations such as atomic addition and compare-exchange. However at the same time dmix also uses a semaphore to prevent multiple processes from accessing the shared memory buffers simultaneously. This is redundant and makes the lock-free implementation rather pointless. Out of curiosity I decided to measure the time it takes to execute snd_pcm_dmix_sync_area for these three cases: - A simple locked implementation, which acquires the semaphore and then does mixing using the non-concurrent code from pcm_dmix_generic.c. - The current (redundant) implementation, which acquires the semaphore and then does atomic mixing. - A lock-free implementation, which does not acquire the semaphore and does atomic mixing. The resulting sound is identical in all three cases. (As a sanity check I also tested the 4th case, non-concurrent code without locking, which as expected produces audio with glitches.) I tested each case with 1, 4 and 20 simultaneous playback streams (multiple instances of 'aplay') on a system with 4 physical CPU cores (Intel Core i7-4770). You can see the results here: https://misc.maartenbaert.be/dmix_perf_locked_atomic.png The results are quite surprising: - The locked implementation is 3 to 6 times *faster* than the current redundant implementation. - The lock-free implementation is usually about as fast as the current redundant implementation, but has extreme outliers that are up to 3 times *slower* than the redundant implementation when there are multiple threads. It seems that the overhead of the atomic operations is so high that it completely negates the theoretical advantage of being able to mix from multiple threads simultaneously. This may be the result of 'false sharing' when multiple threads are accessing different words in the same cache line (which is almost impossible to avoid when mixing audio). On a related note, I believe that I have also found a bug in the lock-free implementation. The logic which is used to clear the 'sum' buffer is as follows: sample = *src; old_sample = *sum; if (ARCH_CMPXCHG(dst, 0, 1) == 0) sample -= old_sample; ARCH_ADD(sum, sample); This takes advantage of the fact that the hardware driver clears the playback buffer after reading it. However it does not account for the possibility that 'dst' might be zero for other reasons, such as: - An application plays back silence. - An application plays back sound, but then rewinds it. - Multiple applications play back sound which just happens to sum to zero occasionally. These all result in situations where 'dst' is changed from 0 to 1 by the compare-exchange operation, but then changed back to zero later, resulting in the classic 'ABA problem'. However this problem is currently hidden by the fact that the lock-free implementation is in fact still locked. Because of these reasons I think it would be better to drop the lock-free implementation entirely and just use the existing non-concurrent architecture-independent implementation from pcm_dmix_generic.c. Aside from being faster, it would also eliminate a lot of architecture-dependent code and inline assembly. Should I submit a patch for this? Best regards, Maarten Baert

Update D0 <-> D3 sequence to correctly transition hardware and DSP core from and to D3. On top of that, set SHIM registers to their recommended defaults during D0 and D3 proceduces as HW does not reset registers for us. [v3] ASoC: AMD: Use mixer control to switch between DMICs

Having mixer control to switch between DMICs prevents user to initiate capture simultaneously on both the DMIcs. Earlier 2 separate devices, one for each DMIC, gave an option of using them simultaneously, which is not supported. Cannot get Lenovo P520/Realtek ALC662 (rev 3) to produce sound

Hello list, this time within wider circle (and with more experience so far). I am seeking for help with shiny new Lenovo P520 machine that only lacks one thing for me to be entirely happy it. I believe this is relatively a new batch -- intentionally mentioning it since the topic of this very machine appears to be a settled case already: https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?… With newest BIOS, running the most recent kernel from Fedora Rawhide (but I did try 5.5.10 kernel from Fedora 30 as well), booted via UEFI (incl. secure boot), the only way to get it to produce any sound whatsoever is to manually load snd-pcsp [*1]. With that done, virtual terminal starts to beep as expected (as in printf '\a'), I am able to run "beep" program, and even "aplay -D hw:pcsp /usr/share/sound/alsa/*.wav" is producing the respective sounds, despite suffering from surrounding noise[*]. That validates that basic function of the built-in speaker works just fine (and previously, it was validated under Windows that it worked just fine). As the linked commit indicates, the proper model parameter to snd-hda-audio module is dual-codecs. I've tried that, and a handful of other models, to no avail. I considered the possibility the problem is just that I cannot work with "mute" state properly, so tried everything I could (incl. alsaunmute), again, without any change. Next dimension to the matrix was attaching external speaker to the front connector. Nothing has helped. Comparing outputs from alsa-info.sh for both states, "no model specified" and "dual-codecs" specified, there was no observable change other than this sole "model" parameter not/being (null). I am not sure whether this means this particular predefined quirk was applied properly, or the same observation is to be expected in general. This patchset contains the anonymous dup implementation with permissions checking for the ALSA's PCM interface in kernel to enable the restricted DMA sound buffer sharing for the restricted tasks. The code was tested through qemu and it seems to be pretty stable. Hi! My window manager stopped responding. I was able to recover machine using sysrq-k. I started writing nice report, when session failed second time. And then third time on next attempt. Any ideas? Hi, Changes since v1: - Fixed DT binding documentation errors - Rebased on ASoC head and updated the driver to compile and work This series adds support for the analog audio setup on the j721e EVM. The audio setup of the EVM is: Common Processor Board (CPB): McASP10 <-> pcm3168a Infotainment Expansion Board (IVI): McASP0 <-> 2x pcm3168a Both CPB and IVI wired in parallel serializer setup. The first patch adds the stream_name for McASP driver as it is needed in multicodec (and would be needed in DPCM) setup for proper DAPM handling. The second patch adds two DT schema, one for the cpb and one for the cpb+ivi card. Hello all, here's patch to document -ENODATA error as a PCM error code. We have recently merged patches to SOF firmware to use this error code: https://github.com/thesofproject/sof/pull/2918 Some additional background on the use-case: https://github.com/thesofproject/sof/issues/2564 In thread "Functionality of pcm_notify in snd-aloop?" https://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2020-April/166974.html .. we discussed the possibility for ALSA to provide a mechanism for application to wait for the condition to change, but at least for the currently known usages, the synchronization responsibility will be in user-space (UCM file will describe the PCM dependencies). Anyways, this is orthogonal to documenting -ENODATA, so sending this now. Hi, recently we wanted to update xilinx intc driver and we found that function which we wanted to remove is still wired by ancient Xilinx PowerPC platforms. Here is the thread about it. https://lore.kernel.org/linux-next/48d3232d-0f1d-42ea-3109-f44bbabfa2e8@xil… I have been talking about it internally and there is no interest in these platforms and it is also orphan for quite a long time. None is really running/testing these platforms regularly that's why I think it makes sense to remove them also with drivers which are specific to this platform.
