Over the last few weeks I've been trying to dig through the snd-usb-audio code to try to get an understanding of it. I've used ftrace and also a local version which I have heavily polluted with kprintf(KERN_INFO statements so I can track what it's doing in practice. I've been playing with this with some USB audio interfaces I have some which work, and some which don't, and trying to understand the differences and, ultimately, what I can do to make the non-functioning ones work. I've got to the point where I have a fairly good understanding of some parts, but I'm struggling to understand why the code is behaving as it does in practice. My observation when plugging the USB device in is that, as expected, it tries to build the audio device, and add components to it including attaching capture and playback streams. It seems to go through this phase without too many surprises, and we get to the standard dmesg output: usbcore: registered new interface driver snd-usb-audio After this, it gets confusing. It seems to open and close the PCMs (e.g, snd_usb_capture_open) several times in a row. Each time it sets up the hardware info, checks and sets the format and then closes the PCM. I don't see anything obviously different between most of these cycles. Certainly in non-working devices the pcm_pointer stays at zero and in working devices it increments. It also seems to try harder with some devices than others, even though the device descriptors seem very similar. Can anyone explain any of this to me, particularly why it's exhibiting this behaviour. I've uploaded one of the logs from a non-working device to Pastebin if anyone wants to look at a full example: https://pastebin.com/uBZEuQ57 Also, is this the best way to approach this, or are there other tools/techniques that can help? [PATCH] ASoC: Intel: haswell: Power transition refactor

Update D0 <-> D3 sequence to correctly transition hardware and DSP core from and to D3. On top of that, set SHIM registers to their recommended defaults during D0 and D3 proceduces as HW does not reset registers for us. Connected to: [alsa-devel][BUG] bdw-rt5650 DSP boot timeout https://mailman.alsa-project.org/pipermail/alsa-devel/2019-July/153098.html Github issue ticket reference: https://github.com/thesofproject/linux/pull/1842 Tested on: - BDW-Y RVP with rt286 - SAMUS with rt5677 Proposed solution (both in July 2019 and on github): 'Revert "ASoC: Intel: Work around to fix HW d3 potential crash issue"' is NAKed as it only covers the problem up and actually brings back the undefined behavior: some registers (e.g.: APLLSE) are describing LPT offsets rather than WPT ones. In consequence, during power-transitions driver issues incorrect writes and leaves the regs of interest alone. Existing patch - the non-revert - does not resolve the HW D3 issue at all as it ignores the recommended sequence and does not initialize hardware registers as expected. And thus, leaving things as are is also unacceptable. This patchset contains the anonymous dup implementation with permissions checking for the ALSA's PCM interface in kernel to enable the restricted DMA sound buffer sharing for the restricted tasks. The code was tested through qemu and it seems to be pretty stable. [alsa-devel] [PATCH] sound/soc: only first codec is master in multicodec setup

When using multiple codecs, at most one codec should generate the master clock. All codecs except the first are therefore configured for slave mode. Before this patch all codecs in a multicodec setup had to be slaves. This is needed when e.g., connecting multiple sound hats for simultaneous playback to the raspberry pi I2S output and one of the sound hats generates the I2S clocks (https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/pull/3337). I checked the raspberry pi kernel tree for multicodec usage with `fgrep num_codecs -R sound/soc/` and verified that all existing multicodec drivers with hardcoded format have indeed configured all codecs for slave mode. Doing a similar check on the current for-5.5 tree is more difficult since .num_codecs is now hidden behind a preprocessor macro. snd_dice: Clicking artifacts with TC StudioKonnekt 48

Hi, thanks to this group, both of my firewire interfaces are (almost) working! Big thank you! While the TC Konnekt 24D works fine (playback and recording), the StudioKonnekt 48 produces clicking artifacts during playback when using snd_dice. This interface is working flawless on Windows and on a Jack/FFADO combination. This artifact occurs in all use cases (alsa via aplay, pulseaudio and jack) and does not seem to be in recorded streams. After recording the playback with another device, it looks like the level of the artifact is scaling with the signal and its interval is interestingly 256ms. Is there anything I can do to further debug this issue? Capture firewire packets? I would love to get this device fully working. I'm using kernel version 5.5.4 but this issue has been there for a long time. Thanks, Mathias

This patchset adds support to Qualcomm WCD9340/WCD9341 Codec which is a standalone Hi-Fi audio codec IC. This codec supports both I2S/I2C and SLIMbus audio interfaces. On slimbus interface it supports two data lanes; 16 Tx ports and 8 Rx ports. It has Five DACs and seven dedicated interpolators, Multibutton headset control (MBHC), Active noise cancellation, Sidetone paths, MAD (mic activity detection) and codec processing engine. It supports Class-H differential earpiece out and stereo single ended headphones out. This codec also has integrated SoundWire controller. Patchset for this is already sent for review at https://patchwork.kernel.org/cover/11185769/ This patchset has been tested on SDM845 based DragonBoard DB845c and Lenovo Yoga C630 laptop with WSA881x smart speaker amplifiers via soundwire and 4 DMICs. gpio controller patch does not have any link dependency, it can go by its own.
