This is the first post RFC submission. In order to make a full demonstration of the framework, wm97xx was converted to an MFD, see [2] for the "why". As this serie is a complete wm9713 change towards the new AC97 bus, here is the patch organization : - 1/9, 2/9, 3/9 and 5/9: the new AC97 bus, for Mark and Takashi to review - 4/9: wm9713 conversion, this one has ugly #ifdefs, should be reviewed more carefully - 6/9: prerequisite for final 9/9, for Marek and Sebastian to approve => this one is independent and can flow through Sebastian's tree in this next-cycle if accepted - 7/9: prerequisite for final 9/9, for Mark/Dmitry => this one is also independent and can flow in this cycle if accepted - 8/9: prerequisite for final 9/9, for Lee to review => this one has a dependency on 2/9, so it probably can't fit in this next-cycle - 9/9: this last one depends on all the patches before, so it can't fit in this next-cycle As a sum-up, I'd like to push for review for this -next cycle at least the patches 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and 9. This is also a problem for regmap adherence, hence the include/sound/ac97/compat.h. - a new AC'97 bus Kconfig is created This was done for a smooth transition ... let's see if it's a good idea. - split the AC'97 into : - the codec - the digital controller - the bus Amongst the things that are not all touched yet : - ac97_codec.c The generic AC'97 codec in sound/pci/ac97/ac97_codec.c has really a lot features, which are not at all PCI related. They could be transfered to sound/ac97, without the pci specific field. => this deserves a deep ahead thinking, which I'll do if the current approach is accepted by the communauty. The most important patch is 2/7 "ALSA: ac97: add an ac97 bus". This is the main evaluation point for the serie, the others are here so that I can test it all. Well, this is a long term effort, which might need a complete rewrite according to the comments it'll get. Let's expose it for comments and see how I can progress with it. Hello, I kept it as RFC as i reworked the global design (but also because not full validated...). Regarding Mark and Jonathan's comments, I decided to try an implementation with DMA support in IIO instead of handling it in ASOC. Solution seems more straightforward but as DMA cyclic mode and associated buffer block API is not part of IIO today, I still need some hacks... To be honest, I tried to integrate DMA cyclic management and associated buffer block Consumer API. but no enough expertise on IIO to success... :( Advantage vs V2: - No more data processing need in ASoC , done in IIO - ASoC uses IIO consumer interface ( except for buffer callback) Drawback : - Need to create a "SPI bus" trigger to allo to use Buffer consumer API => Need to find a solution to set this trigger by default in IIO audio driver - No standard buffer management - Implement DMA cyclic in DFSDM IIO driver. - Define specific API to handle buffer callback per period instead of callback per samples generated by iio_push_to_buffers_with_timestamp. Patch-set is only a Skeleton of the drivers, so a base to discuss and validate a design. It contains minimum code to allow probing (with DT) and to expose the ASoC and IIO ABI. Hope that is sufficent in a first step to allow to focus on APIs. In this patch-set there are two new APIs used: - IIO in-kern API: based on hw_customer API proposed by Lars - ASOC <-> IIO API inspired by API defined for hdmi-codec for ASoC/DRM interconnect. API is dedicated to DFSDM only. Requested, as DFSDM samples captured contain channel ID on 8-LSB bits and need also a potential rescale to present DAT on 24-bits. - "IIO: ADC: add sigma delta modulator support" patch: Simple dummy driver created to support external Sigma delta modulator. These patches specifically enable the audio MCLK required by Baytrail CR devices. It is the remaining part of a bigger set of patches (already merged in Mark Brown's tree) that enable sound for Baytrail CR devices (especially Asus T100TAF) [1]. They include the clock driver and clock enabling in the pmc_atom code (along with moving of the non-architectural pmc_atom driver code into drivers/platform/x86 as suggested by Thomas Gleixner [2]). This move includes a new header in include/linux/platform_data/x86/. [alsa-devel] additional high input device for snd-dice (A&H Zed R16)

Hi, I noticed on the changelog that some devices are able to access all channels without doing any .asoundrc funkiness. Form 4.6 kernel onwards - Add support for previously unavailable higher PCM channels on certain devices with high channel count, notably Focusrite Saffire PRO 40, Focusrite Liquid Saffire 56, and TC Electronic Studio Konnekt 48. These devices spread the PCM and MIDI channels across 2 tx + 2 rx IEEE 1394 channels instead of just 1 tx + 1 rx IEEE 1394 channel, as most other devices do. Pretty sure I've tested with 4.6 and wasn't able to achieve this with my device. But can test again with 4.8 if I am wrong. My device is an Allen and Heath Zed R16.. While latency performance in the way ALSA works is not satisfactory for my usage others may wish to use this device with ALSA for simplicity. (remove the need for FFADO entirely as there is no software mixer for this device and remove the need for any MIDI bridge) Currently under ALSA in 44.1k or 48k the device has 16 inputs and 16 outputs on the first firewire channel, and then and additional 10 ins and 10 outs on the second. If this is any help, here is the vendor info, as used by FFADO { # Allen and Heath Zed R16. Information from Brendan Pike. vendorid = 0x000004C4; modelid = 0x00000000; vendorname = "Allen and Heath"; modelname = "Zed R16"; driver = "DICE"; mixer = "Generic_Dice_EAP"; } On that latency topic- just voicing my opinion and I don't expect change. When the paradigm of using periods/frames and buffers is common across all OS and driver platforms, I don't believe that the driver should force developers to implement a new method, even if there are better ways of doing things. That might be okay for small open source projects, but bigger commercial applications would not be likely to maintain separate configuration options for Linux, they are more likely to drop Linux altogether if forced to adopt I also know that Takashi S, does not agree but as FFADO devs have agreed to keep the driver in FFADO I don't mind..

I am building my kernel against the drm-tip freedesktop repository which includes the patches from December 2016 (message id <1480992519-108079-1-git-send-email-libin.yang(a)intel.com> and follow-ups on alsa-devel). I am using a ThinkPad X250 and the ThinkPad Ultra Dock with the HDMI output connected to my YAMAHA HTR-2866; this hdmi output is seen as display port and uses DP MST from the dock. In principle, everything is working quite well; however, I frequently recognize two weird behaviours: * First of all, my audio receiver has 5.1 support. When I configure my laptop to send 5.1 audio using alsa or pulseaudio, there is only silence and no audio signal reaches the receiver; however, when I choose 7.1 digital surround (which my receiver actually does not suppo rt natively), everything works well and the two additional speakers are split to the existing ones (I do not know whether alsa/the kernel or the receiver does this, probably it is the receiver). This problem is pretty much only esthetical, as everything works fine if I use the 7.1 "work-around" (Digital Stereo does work also, but obviously does not support the full 5.1 setup) * The other problem -- which is actually very annoying -- is that there frequently is silence though there is audio playing; this happens now and then, but when there has been *no* output for a while, it always happens a few seconds after starting the new output and lasts for two to three seconds. During these periods of silence, the icons on my receiver indicating that there is an audio source are also gone. This problem occurs with 7.1 configuration as well as with Digital Stereo. I am not sure what these problems are caused by and do not know what kin d of debug information you may require to get more hints on how to solve them. Any hints are appreciated. Hi Rob, Mark Cc Guennadi, Laurent Now OF graph is mainly used by V4L2 SoC, and ALSA SoC is using different style for SoC <-> Codec binding. But, for example, HDMI case, V4L2 <-> ALSA need to collaborate, and then ALSA SoC needs to adjust to OF graph. OTOH, V4L2's "OF graph" position is same as ALSA SoC "sound card" position. And ALSA SoC side want to keep existing supported feature on new OF graph style. I'm posting this on ALSA SoC ML now. Now, current of_graph is indicating port/endpoint, but there is no way to understand that it is for video port ? or sound port ? or other device port ? For example, HDMI has video port, and sound port. Because of this reason, ALSA SoC side can't handle OF graph correctly. Thus, this patch-set tries to add new "type" on OF graph. And this patch-set includes small feature which are useful for ALSA SoC side OF graph support.
