[alsa-devel] [PATCH v2] sound/oss: remove offset from load_patch callbacks
by Dan Rosenberg 23 Mar '11
by Dan Rosenberg 23 Mar '11
23 Mar '11
Was: [PATCH] sound/oss/midi_synth: prevent underflow, use of
uninitialized value, and signedness issue
The offset passed to midi_synth_load_patch() can be essentially
arbitrary. If it's greater than the header length, this will result in
a copy_from_user(dst, src, negative_val). While this will just return
-EFAULT on x86, on other architectures this may cause memory corruption.
Additionally, the length field of the sysex_info structure may not be
initialized prior to its use. Finally, a signed comparison may result
in an unintentionally large loop.
On suggestion by Takashi Iwai, version two removes the offset argument
from the load_patch callbacks entirely, which also resolves similar
issues in opl3. Compile tested only.

[alsa-devel] PROBLEM: Asoc driver in 2.6.37.3 for AT91SAM9260 / TLV320AIC3X is broken
by Prchal Jiří 23 Mar '11
by Prchal Jiří 23 Mar '11
23 Mar '11
Hallo,
at first I would like to apologize of sending this report to too many mails, but I can't find the right person / list.
[2.] Full description of the problem/report:
I try for almost 2 month to make kernel with alsa for my hardware. I first try version 2.6.37, now trying 2.6.37.3. My
hw i similar to board afeb-9260, just with difference my codec is TLV320AIC3106 connected as slave with clock on BCLK.
So I change file snd-soc-afeb9260.c, diff is attached, and Kconfig and Makefile too.
In version 2.6.35.11 it works good, but MMC/SD card doesn't work. (Something is broken it that driver just in this
version). I need to work sound and SD card.
I thing the problem is somewhere between "tlv320aic3x-codec 0-001a: probe" and "i2c-core: driver [tlv320aic3x-codec]
registered". In version 2.6.35.11 there is I2C communication, in 2.6.37 and higher nothing on I2C.
I also try to put newer alsa 1.0.24 to kernel 2.6.37.3 without any improvement.
Trying to put older alsa (but same version?) from kernel 2.6.35.11 to 2.6.37.3 produce soundcard, but when try to play
kernel oops, "cannot dereference null pointer" and freezes.
I try many versions of
/* Digital audio interface glue - connects codec <--> CPU */
static struct snd_soc_dai_link afeb9260_dai = {
.name = "TLV320AIC3X", //AIC3X
.stream_name = "AIC3X",
.cpu_dai_name = "atmel-ssc-dai.0", //atmel-ssc-dai
.codec_dai_name = "tlv320aic3x-hifi", //aic3x, aic3x-hifi, tlv320aic3x
.platform_name = "atmel-pcm-audio", //atmel_pcm-audio
.codec_name = "tlv320aic3x-codec.0-001a", //tlv320aic3x-codec.0-0x1a
.init = afeb9260_aic3x_init,
.ops = &afeb9260_ops,
};
but without any improvement.
I really don't know what should I try at next, I thing I've tryed all.

In older version 2.6.35.11 I had to set codec to have clock on BCLK. I thing this is not good way to set it, but it works.

[alsa-devel] [PATCH] sound/oss/midi_synth: prevent underflow, use of uninitialized value, and signedness issue
by Dan Rosenberg 23 Mar '11
by Dan Rosenberg 23 Mar '11
23 Mar '11
The offset passed to midi_synth_load_patch() can be essentially
arbitrary. If it's greater than the header length, this will result in
a copy_from_user(dst, src, negative_val). While this will just return
-EFAULT on x86, on other architectures this may cause memory corruption.
Additionally, the length field of the sysex_info structure may not be
initialized prior to its use. Finally, a signed comparison may result
in an unintentionally large loop.
This patch fixes all these issues, as well as some cleanup to prevent
checkpatch.pl from complaining.

[alsa-devel] pci/hda/patch_via.c - broken between 2.6.36 and 2.6.37 (bisected)
by Wolfgang Scheicher 23 Mar '11
by Wolfgang Scheicher 23 Mar '11

After the mentioned Kernel upgrade quite a view things went wrong on my
hardware ( http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=890GM%20Pro3 ):
* Microphone doesn't work anymore. neither the front mic nor the rear one.
Tried all thinkable settings.
* Increasing Microphone levels leads to some strange internal feedback. That
means, at some point when the feedback starts, it just starts, but i have no
clue what audio source did actually trigger it.
* Touching the mixer channel "Smart 5.1" in alsamixer makes alsamicer crash.
After quite some days of frustration and the inability to get help i however
managed to learn how to build a kernel and how to git bisect. So this is
what i did:

Oh, and here are debug infos from when i first tried to report the problem:
bad:
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=0f29e6de98ea9fefae5c6e2adb43ff8f8eede697
good:
http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=11290fe50066e9bcd6a244f2c83b1c66c9dd201b
I hope someone can take it from here. I'm not much more than a user. Just
because i managed to build a kernel doesn't mean i can fix this bug.

Then I load the module as "modprobe snd-bt87x load_all=1
